Dimplex Ignite Bold® Linear Electric Fireplace Size Guide
Framing dimensions, clearances, and electrical requirements for all five sizes of the Ignite Bold® — 50", 60", 74", 88", and 100".
Overview
What this guide covers and what makes the Ignite Bold® distinct
This guide provides the framing dimensions, clearances, and electrical requirements needed to plan and build an installation for the Dimplex Ignite Bold® linear electric fireplace. It covers all five sizes: 50", 60", 74", 88", and 100". All values are sourced from the Dimplex installation manual.
The Ignite Bold® is a built-in, recessed electric fireplace that requires a framed wall opening. One box contains hardware for four configurations: front-facing, left corner, right corner, and bay. Framing dimensions are identical across all four configurations — you do not need to adjust your rough opening based on which configuration you choose.
Two people are required for installation
The Dimplex installation manual requires two people for all installation work. Plan accordingly before beginning framing.
Certified for outdoor installation
The Ignite Bold® is certified for outdoor use when installed under a compliant overhang. See the Outdoor Installation section for the overhang geometry rule required to maintain warranty coverage.
⚠ Not load-bearing
This fireplace is NOT load-bearing. Ensure the framed opening is constructed so that the weight of building materials does not create pressure on the top of the firebox. Do not drill into the firebox housing.
Installation Configurations
Four configurations, one framing opening
The Ignite Bold® ships with hardware for four distinct configurations, all included in the box. The framing opening you build is the same for every configuration — only the side glass and trim panels differ.
Supported configurations
- Front installation — glass faces forward only; closed side trims installed on both sides
- Left corner installation — glass faces forward and to the left; left side open, right side closed
- Right corner installation — glass faces forward and to the right; right side open, left side closed
- Bay installation — glass faces forward and to both sides; both sides open
Framing dimensions are identical for all four configurations
The installation manual states explicitly: "The dimensions are the same for front, corner, and bay installations." Use the framing table in this guide regardless of which configuration you plan to build.
Multi-unit modular installation
Multiple Ignite Bold® units can be joined side-by-side using the linking kit accessory (XLFXDLINK, sold separately). For modular installations, the combined framing width equals the sum of the individual unit framing widths. Refer to the instructions included with the accessory kit for joining bracket placement.
Wiring access
Wiring connects at the top right back corner of the firebox. Plan framing and conduit routing to reach this location before enclosing the wall.
Framing Requirements
All dimensions from the Dimplex installation manual — based on 1/2" drywall
The table below shows the framing opening required for each model. Height and minimum depth are identical across all five sizes. Width varies by model. These dimensions assume a 1/2" drywall finish; adjust if using a different finish thickness.
Framing dimensions — all models
| Model | Nominal Size | Framing W | Framing H | Framing D (min) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XLF5017-XD | 50" | 49 1/2" | 24 1/4" | 11 5/8" |
| XLF6017-XD | 60" | 62 1/4" | 24 1/4" | 11 5/8" |
| XLF7417-XD | 74" | 74 5/8" | 24 1/4" | 11 5/8" |
| XLF8817-XD | 88" | 87 3/16" | 24 1/4" | 11 5/8" |
| XLF10017-XD | 100" | 99 3/4" | 24 1/4" | 11 5/8" |
These framing dimensions are the same for front, corner (left and right), and bay installations. For multi-unit installations, add the framing widths of each unit used to determine total opening width.
120V and 240V installations use the same framing dimensions
The installation manual does not specify different framing requirements for 120V versus 240V supply. The framing dimensions in the table above apply to both voltage configurations.
Clearances
Required clearances from the Dimplex installation manual
Vertical clearances
The top of the fireplace must be installed a minimum of 24" (61 cm) from the ceiling. The bottom of the unit must be a minimum of 5" (13 cm) from the ground. For an optimized flame viewing angle, the manufacturer recommends mounting the bottom of the unit between 5" and 40" from the floor.
Clearance to combustibles at front
Keep combustible materials — furniture, pillows, bedding, papers, clothing, curtains — at least 3 feet (0.9 m) from the front of the fireplace.
Clearance for overhanging objects (televisions, mantels, artwork)
Surfaces 7" (18 cm) above the fireplace will not exceed 40°C under normal heat mode, as long as installation procedures are followed and the heater inlet and outlet are not obstructed. For specific overhang scenarios, consult the thermal clearance chart in the Dimplex installation manual — areas within 7" directly above the unit may exceed 65°C and are not suitable for temperature-sensitive objects.
Verify clearance with the thermal chart before mounting a TV
The manual provides a chart showing temperature zones by height above the unit and horizontal depth of the overhang. Consult that chart for your specific mounting scenario before placing any temperature-sensitive object above the fireplace.
Side and rear clearances
Specific side and rear clearance values are not stated in the Dimplex installation manual. Follow local building codes for any additional clearance requirements.
Bathroom installations
If the unit is installed in a bathroom, it must be protected by a GFCI receptacle or circuit. If a receptacle is used, it must be readily accessible. This unit is not watertight.
Electrical Requirements
All five models share the same electrical specification
Electrical specifications — all models
Wiring configurations
- 120V hardwire — 3-wire supply; standard installation method
- 120V with wall switch — requires a single-pole, single-throw (On/Off) switch rated for a minimum of 15 amps
- 240V hardwire — requires a 4-wire supply: L1, L2, Neutral, and Ground
- 120V plug-in — optional plug kit (XLFXDPLUG, sold separately); 120V only; do not use with an extension cord
Dedicated circuit
A dedicated, properly fused 15 amp circuit is recommended for both voltage configurations. If the circuit breaker trips or fuse blows regularly when the heater is operating, a dedicated circuit is required.
Wiring connects at the top right back corner of the firebox. The installation must comply with applicable local and national electrical codes. For outdoor installations, installation on a ground-fault protected circuit is recommended.
If a strain relief connector is needed for the service cable entry through the electrical cover, use a 1/2" (1.3 cm) approved strain relief connector.

Outdoor Installation
Requirements for outdoor-certified installations
The Ignite Bold® is certified for outdoor installation. The unit must be installed under an overhang that protects it from direct water ingress. The Ignite Bold® is not watertight.
Overhang geometry rule (required for warranty coverage)
The overhang must satisfy this condition: Maximum Height ≤ 3 × Projection Length
- Maximum Height — measured vertically from the bottom of the fireplace to the bottom edge of the overhang
- Projection Length — measured from the exposed face of the fireplace to the parallel edge of the overhang
Example: if the overhang is 9 feet above the bottom of the fireplace, it must extend at least 3 feet outward on all sides.
⚠ Overhead protection is required for outdoor installations
Failing to install under a compliant overhang will void the outdoor warranty. Outdoor installations carry a 1-year limited warranty (indoor installations carry 5 years).
Additional outdoor requirements
- Installation on a ground-fault protected circuit is recommended
- All electrical connections and routing must comply with local building code requirements
- The unit must be inspected at minimum seasonally for outdoor installations (versus yearly for indoor)
- Accumulated dust and debris must be cleared before operation
