Fire Magic Echelon Diamond Size Guide: 30″–48″ Built-In

Cutout dimensions, clearances, gas connection, and electrical requirements for the Echelon Diamond built-in lineup — E660i (30″), E790i (36″), and E1060i (48″) — plus E1060s portable cart-mount notes.

At a Glance

Cutout depth and height are uniform. All Echelon Diamond built-in heads use the same 23½″ cutout depth and 11½″ cutout height. Only cutout width changes by size — 31¼″ (E660i), 37″ (E790i), 50″ (E1060i).

Side wall clearance: 18″ minimum. Rear wall: 4″ minimum from non-combustible, 14″ from protected combustible, or 18″ from unprotected combustible. Corner walls: 24″ minimum. Backsplash: 4″ minimum (non-combustible).

120V GFCI outlet required. Every Echelon Diamond grill needs 120VAC / 15A service for the Hot Surface Ignition, Black Glass touchscreen, digital thermometer, and halogen lights. Mount the outlet on a GFCI-protected three-wire grounded receptacle within the enclosure.

Gas inlet pressures. Natural gas: 7″ W.C. normal (5″ min, 10½″ max). Propane: 11″ W.C. normal (10″ min, 13″ max). Supply pipe ½″ minimum interior diameter; manual shut-off valve required within 6 feet.

Combustible enclosure ≠ standard cutout. The cutout dimensions below assume a non-combustible enclosure. If installing in a combustible enclosure, an approved Fire Magic insulating liner is required (sold separately) and the cutout dimensions change — check the liner instructions for the adjusted cutout.

Cooling and heating appliance gaps. 14″ minimum from cooling appliances (refrigerator, kegerator). 12″ minimum from heating appliances (pizza oven, griddle). Plan adjacent built-in spacing accordingly.

How to Measure Your Opening

Three dimensions matter — width, depth, height — plus the surrounding clearance envelope

Before you commit to an Echelon Diamond size, measure the opening you have to work with — or, if you're framing a new island, the opening you intend to build. Three dimensions decide whether the head will drop in:

  • Width. Side-to-side along the front face of the island. The grill head drops in from above. Cutout width is 31¼″ (E660i 30″), 37″ (E790i 36″), and 50″ (E1060i 48″).
  • Depth. Front-to-back from the inside of the front island wall to the inside of the back wall. Cutout depth is 23½″ across the entire Echelon Diamond built-in lineup.
  • Height (drop). Top-of-counter down to the bottom of the island enclosure. Cutout height is 11½″ across the entire lineup. This is the depth of the head body that hangs into the island below the counter line.

Beyond the cutout itself, also confirm the clearance envelope around the island: 18″ minimum from each side of the grill to any combustible material, 4–18″ from the rear depending on rear-wall construction, 24″ from any corner wall, and a clear vertical air column above the grill. The Clearances section below covers each scenario in detail. Verify there is also a 120VAC GFCI-protected outlet within reach of the cutout — Echelon Diamond requires electrical service for the ignition system, touchscreen, thermometer, and lights.

⚠️

Cutout vs. lip-to-lip dimension

The grill head's overall outside footprint is larger than the cutout — the head includes a stainless steel hanger that rests on the front, sides, and back of the cutout to support the unit. The lip-to-lip dimension (33″ for E660i, 38¾″ for E790i, 51¾″ for E1060i) describes the outer edge of that hanger. Always frame the rough opening to the published cutout dimension; the lip dimension is for verifying counter overhang and surrounding finish.

E1060s Portable does not require a cutout

The Echelon Diamond E1060s 48″ Portable (SKU E1060S-9E1N-51) is cart-mounted on the 1060-SC51 base — it is not a built-in head and does not drop into an island cutout. Plan a flat, level outdoor surface with adequate clearance on all sides for the cart's overall footprint (approximately 117″ × 30½″ with side shelves up; 87¾″ × 30½″ with shelves down) and a 120VAC GFCI outlet within reach for the ignition and lights.

Clearance Requirements

Minimum distances from the grill body to any combustible material

Per the Fire Magic owner's manual, every Echelon Diamond built-in must maintain the minimum clearances below. The clearances differ by what the grill is adjacent to — non-combustible material (brick, masonry, properly rated stainless steel, concrete) gets shorter clearances; protected or unprotected combustible material requires more space.

Side wall, corner, and adjacent appliances

Side wall18″ min
Corner wall24″ min
Cooling appliance14″ min
Heating appliance12″ min

Side wall clearance applies to any wall on either side of the grill. Corner wall clearance accounts for variables in airflow that affect grill performance — corner installations need more breathing room. Cooling appliance clearance (14″) covers refrigerators, kegerators, and the like; heating appliance clearance (12″) covers adjacent built-in pizza ovens and griddles.

Rear wall — depends on construction

Rear wall type Minimum clearance Notes
Non-combustible (brick, masonry, stainless steel) 4″ Allows ventilation and prevents overheating.
Protected combustible (4″ non-combustible substrate over combustible wall) 14″ 4″ substrate plus 10″ clearance.
Unprotected combustible (wood-frame wall) 18″ Required if no non-combustible barrier is installed.

Backsplash

If a non-combustible backsplash is installed, it must have a minimum 4″ clearance from the rear of the unit. The 4″ backsplash clearance must be met first before any non-combustible walls begin behind it.

Vent openings

The Fire Magic owner's manual specifies a 6″ minimum clearance between vent openings in the side walls of the enclosure and a 2″ minimum clearance between vent openings and any items within the enclosure. Plan vent placement on the cylinder enclosure (LP installations) and any storage cabinetry accordingly.

Outdoor use only

Every Fire Magic grill is for outdoor use only. Never install or operate the grill in any building, garage, recreational vehicle, boat, or other enclosed area. Do not install in or under combustible construction without an approved insulating liner (sold separately). The grill produces carbon monoxide; using it in an enclosed area can be fatal. The appliance is considered outdoor only when installed with no overhead cover, with overhead cover and no more than two sidewalls, or with overhead cover and three sidewalls where 30% or more of the horizontal periphery is permanently open and unrestricted.

Gas Connection

Inlet pressure, supply pipe sizing, and BTU demand by model

Inlet pressure

Fuel Normal Minimum Maximum
Natural gas (NG) 7″ W.C. 5″ W.C. 10½″ W.C.
Propane (LP) 11″ W.C. 10″ W.C. 13″ W.C.

An additional regulator may be needed to meet these inlet pressure ranges depending on the supply system. The grill ships with a C.S.A. approved stainless steel flex connector pre-installed to the valve manifold, with a flare-to-NPT adapter for ½″ pipe.

Supply pipe sizing and shut-off valve

  • Gas supply pipe must be ½″ minimum interior diameter.
  • If the gas line is longer than 20 feet, a larger diameter line may be necessary — refer to NFPA 54 guidelines.
  • A manual shut-off valve is required in the supply line within 6 feet of the unit, and must be easily accessible.
  • Use a pipe joint compound resistant to all gases on all NPT pipe fittings (not on flare fittings).
  • Do not use rubber hose within the enclosure.
  • A sediment trap is recommended downstream of the shut-off valve, as close to the unit as possible.

Total BTU demand by model

Model Main burners Backburner Optional Infrared sear Total peak BTU/hr
E660i 30″ 75,000 (3 × 25,000) 11,000 86,000
E790i 36″ 90,000 (3 × 30,000) 13,000 103,000
E1060i 48″ 112,000 (4 × 28,000) 22,000 (2 × 11,000) ~16,000 (E1060I-9L1N) 134,000–150,000
E1060s 48″ Portable 112,000 (4 × 28,000) 22,000 (2 × 11,000) + 60,000 Power Burner 194,000

Size the supply line based on the peak demand of the grill plus any other appliances drawing from the same supply (range, water heater, dryer, fire feature, side burner). Consult a licensed gas plumber for the appropriate pipe diameter and length.

Pressure testing

The grill and its individual shut-off valve must be disconnected from the gas supply piping during any system pressure testing at test pressures in excess of ½ PSI (3.5 kPa). The grill must be isolated from the gas supply piping by closing its individual manual shut-off valve during any pressure testing of the gas supply piping system at test pressures equal to or less than ½ PSI.

Electrical Requirements

120V GFCI outlet required for ignition, touchscreen, thermometer, and lights

Every Echelon Diamond grill requires 120VAC / 15A service within the enclosure for the Push-to-Light Hot Surface Ignition system, the Black Glass touchscreen control panel (digital models), the digital thermometer, and the internal halogen lights. The Magic View Window option does not change the electrical requirement.

Outlet specification

  • Use only a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protected three-wire grounded receptacle, rated 15 AMP minimum.
  • The grill must be electrically grounded in accordance with local codes, or NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) where local codes are absent.
  • Mount the outlet within reach of the grill enclosure — the supply cord should not stretch tightly across heat sources.
  • Keep the supply cord away from heated surfaces; unplug the grill before cleaning or servicing.
  • Use only extension cords with a three-prong grounding plug, rated for the power of the equipment, and approved for outdoor use with a W-A marking. Never remove the grounding plug or use a two-prong adapter.

Bluetooth / Wi-Fi (digital models)

Echelon Diamond digital models (the -9E1* SKUs) include Bluetooth/Wi-Fi connectivity for remote control via the Fire Magic app. Wi-Fi range from the home router to the grill enclosure should be verified before final placement — line-of-sight to the router is best, and metal cabinetry around the cutout can attenuate the signal.

Island Planning Notes

LP cylinder enclosure, framing materials, ventilation, and weight

LP cylinder enclosure (LP installations only)

If the grill is installed in a built-in island and the fuel is propane, the Fire Magic owner's manual requires a separate, isolated enclosure for the LP gas cylinder. The enclosure must:

  • Contain a single LP cylinder (no spare cylinder stored alongside the in-use cylinder).
  • Isolate the cylinder from the burner compartment with a non-combustible heat shield, a flame barrier, and protection from foreign material such as hot drippings.
  • Provide vent register openings at the top and bottom of the enclosure to allow propane vapor (heavier than air) to escape if a leak occurs and to allow combustion air to circulate.
  • Make the cylinder reachable for swap-out without reaching into the heat zone behind the grill.
  • Include a means of cylinder retention so the cylinder cannot tip or move.

Plan a code-compliant access door for cylinder swap-out. Maintain a 6″ minimum clearance between vent openings and a 2″ minimum clearance between vents and other items inside the enclosure.

Framing materials

The cutout dimensions in the table above assume a non-combustible enclosure. If you are framing a wood or other combustible enclosure, an approved Fire Magic insulating liner is required (sold separately) — and the cutout dimensions change to accommodate the liner thickness. Refer to the liner instructions for the adjusted cutout. Pre-fabricated outdoor kitchen islands designed for built-in gas grills typically meet the non-combustible requirement.

Per the Fire Magic owner's manual: the enclosure must be installed on a hard and level surface, must be properly vented, must have a non-combustible countertop, and must allow access to the interior for installation and service. The grill is supported by the stainless steel hanger extending from the upper portion of the unit (resting on left, right, and back of the cutout) plus the two front support adjustment bolts located below the control panel.

Counter substrate and overhang

If the countertop extends beyond the front wall (creating a countertop overhang), the overhang must be cut flush with the front wall for the width of the control panel — or a gap will be created exposing the forward portions of the left and right side firewalls. Maintain ¼″ clearance around the control panel for removal and service.

Substrate added to the enclosure front wall (tile, stone, etc.) sitting flush behind the control panel must be accounted for in the front-to-back cutout depth. Substrate alongside the control panel does not need to be considered in the cutout depth, but a ¼″ clearance on each side and below the substrate is required.

Ventilation

The enclosure must be properly vented per the Fire Magic owner's manual VENTILATION section. Each vent opening at the floor level must have a minimum 1.5 sq in vent area; additional venting at the upper portion of the enclosure allows convective airflow to remove heat and any escaping gas. Vent openings must maintain 6″ clearance between each opening and 2″ clearance from any item within the enclosure.

Permanent outdoor installation only

The Fire Magic warranty applies to the original purchaser at the original installation address and to single-family residential use only. Coverage is voided for grills installed in commercial, rental, or non-residential applications. See the Warranty section of the comparison guide for the full tier table before specifying for a property that may not qualify for residential warranty coverage.
