All four sizes covered
This guide includes confirmed framing, overall, and viewing area dimensions for all four IgniteXL models: 50" (XLF50), 60" (XLF60), 74" (XLF74), and 100" (XLF100). All values are from the Dimplex installation documentation for each size.
Installation Types
All dimensions from the Dimplex installation manual
The IgniteXL supports two installation configurations, determined by the depth of the wall framing:
Partially Recessed β 2Γ4 Wall (3-1/2" framing depth)
When installed in a standard 2Γ4 partition wall, the unit sits partially recessed with a portion of the firebox extending beyond the wall face. A trim kit (sold separately, model X-XLFTRIM50 for the 50" unit) is recommended to cover the gap between the fireplace face and the finished wall surface. This configuration is suitable for drywall and tile finishes.
Flush-Mounted β 2Γ6 Wall (5-1/2" framing depth)
A 2Γ6 framed wall allows the unit to sit fully flush with the wall surface for a clean, edgeless installation. Trim is optional in this configuration. The unit installs without trim to stone, brick, and other solid finish materials; the included trim is used for drywall and tile surfaces.
β οΈ Load-Bearing Warning
This fireplace is NOT load-bearing. Ensure the opening is framed so that the weight of building materials does not create pressure on the top of the fireplace. Two people are required for installation.
β οΈ Decorative Finish Overhang Limit
Decorative finishing material, such as brick, must be limited to Β½" (1.3 cm) of overhang over the fireplace opening to ensure adequate flow of heated air out of the firebox area.
Wiring Entry Location
The wiring entry point is located on the right side at the bottom of the firebox. Plan the framing to allow routing of the power cable to this location before the wall is closed.
Serviceable from the Front
All internal components are replaceable from the front of the fireplace while the unit is mounted in the wall. No rear access is required for future servicing.
Electrical Requirements
All electrical values from the Dimplex installation manual β XLF50 only
The IgniteXL supports hardwired connection at 120V or 240V. The voltage configuration affects heat output and amperage draw but does not change the framing or rough opening dimensions. Select the voltage based on circuit availability and desired heat output.

120V vs. 240V β same rough opening, different heat
The framing and rough opening dimensions are identical regardless of whether you choose 120V or 240V wiring. The difference is heat output only: 240V delivers 2,500W (8,530 BTU) vs. 1,500W (5,118 BTU) at 120V. Plan your circuit before installation β switching voltage after the wall is closed requires re-wiring.
XLF60, XLF74, XLF100 β Electrical Specifications
All four IgniteXL models share identical electrical specifications. The voltage and wattage ratings are the same across the 50", 60", 74", and 100" models. Select the voltage based on circuit availability and desired heat output.
Outdoor installations
For outdoor installations, a ground-fault protected circuit is recommended. All electrical connections and routings must comply with local building code requirements. See the Clearances & Safety section for outdoor overhang rules.
Clearances & Safety
Installation clearance guidelines from the Dimplex installation manual
Television and Overhanging Objects
For overhanging temperature-sensitive objects β such as a television, mantel, or artwork β always follow the recommendations provided by that object's manufacturer for installation over a heater. The Dimplex installation manual provides a heat zone chart for the area above the fireplace, describing three zones:
- The zone immediately above the unit (within approximately 10β12 inches height and 1β4 inches depth from the glass) is subject to temperatures exceeding 65Β°C (149Β°F).
- A broader surrounding zone is subject to temperatures exceeding 40Β°C (104Β°F).
- Areas sufficiently above and away from the unit fall below 40Β°C (104Β°F).
No single minimum clearance number is stated in the installation manual. The manufacturer directs installers to the overhang manufacturer's own installation guidelines. Consult a qualified installer if you are unsure whether your planned overhang is within safe temperature range.
Side, rear, bottom, and ceiling clearances
Specific clearance values for sides, rear, bottom, and ceiling are not published in the Dimplex installation documentation. Install per the manufacturer's complete installation instructions. If clearance values are required for a permit or local code compliance, contact Dimplex directly or consult a licensed installer before beginning construction.
Outdoor Installation β Overhang Requirements
The IgniteXL is approved for outdoor installation in areas sheltered by an overhang that protects against direct water ingress. To maintain warranty coverage, the overhang must satisfy the following relationship:
Maximum Height β€ 3 Γ Projection Length
- Maximum Height β measured vertically from the bottom of the fireplace to the bottom edge of the overhang
- Projection Length β measured from the exposed face of the fireplace to the parallel edge of the overhang
The installation manual specifies the overhang must be more than 24 inches above the bottom of the fireplace and extend more than 5 inches outward. For example: if the overhang is 9 feet above the bottom of the fireplace, it must extend at least 3 feet outward on all sides.
Outdoor warranty term
Indoor installations carry a 5-year limited warranty. Outdoor installations carry a 1-year limited warranty. Warranty coverage for outdoor installations requires the overhang to satisfy the dimensions above.
Overheating Protection
The IgniteXL has a built-in thermal cutoff that automatically shuts the unit off if the heater overheats. To reset: turn the unit off at the main disconnect panel and wait 5 minutes before turning it back on. If the heater requires repeated resets, turn off at the panel and contact Dimplex technical support.
