SimpliFire Built-In Electric Fireplace Size Guide
Framing dimensions, electrical requirements, and clearance values for the SF-BI30-EB and SF-BI36-EB — both 120V and 240V configurations.
Overview
What this guide covers
This guide covers the installation dimensions and electrical requirements for the SimpliFire Built-In Electric Fireplace, available in two models: the SF-BI30-EB (30-inch) and the SF-BI36-EB (36-inch). Both can be installed in new construction framing or into an existing factory-built fireplace.
One dimension — the framing height — differs depending on whether you wire the unit for 120V or 240V. This is documented in the installation manual and is covered in detail in the Framing Requirements section. Confirm your wiring voltage before framing.
120V or 240V: frame before you wire
The framing height for both models is 2 inches taller at 240V than at 120V. Determine your voltage before setting the rough opening — it cannot be adjusted after the wall is finished.

Framing Requirements
Rough-in dimensions — confirm voltage before framing
The framing height (H1) is voltage-dependent. The 120V and 240V configurations require different rough-in heights because the 240V installation requires a 2-inch stand-off clearance on the top of the unit. Framing width and depth are identical for both voltages.
120V Framing Dimensions
| Model | Framing Width (W1) | Framing Height H1 — 120V | Framing Depth (D1) |
|---|---|---|---|
| SF-BI30-EB | 31-3/4" | 27-1/4" | 11-5/8" |
| SF-BI36-EB | 37-3/4" | 31-1/2" | 11-5/8" |
240V Framing Dimensions
| Model | Framing Width (W1) | Framing Height H1 — 240V | Framing Depth (D1) |
|---|---|---|---|
| SF-BI30-EB | 31-3/4" | 29-1/4" | 11-5/8" |
| SF-BI36-EB | 37-3/4" | 33-1/2" | 11-5/8" |
Sub-floor installations require shimming
If the appliance is installed on a sub-floor, it must be shimmed to accommodate the finished flooring thickness. The framing height (H1) will increase accordingly. Account for this before setting the rough opening.
Why 240V needs 2" more height
When hard-wired for 240V, the supplied stand-offs on the top of the unit must be bent to a vertical position to maintain a 2-inch clearance between the top of the firebox and any insulation or vapor barrier above it. This clearance is not required for 120V installations.
Finishing Dimensions

⚠️ Qualified electrician required
All electrical connections must be performed by a qualified electrician. Wiring must comply with local building electrical codes and the latest edition of NFPA 70 (National Electric Code). Confirm the voltage selector switch — located behind the glass on the ceiling of the unit — is set to the correct voltage before energizing. Failure to set the switch correctly can damage the product.
Bathroom installations
If installed in a bathroom, the unit must be protected by a GFI receptacle or circuit. The receptacle must be readily accessible. The appliance is not water-tight and must be kept away from showers, tubs, and other water sources.
Clearances to Combustibles
Safety-critical — do not reduce these values
The SimpliFire Built-In Series is a zero-clearance design at 120V. At 240V, a 2-inch clearance is required at the top. Front clearance applies to both voltages.
| Direction | 120V Clearance | 240V Clearance |
|---|---|---|
| Sides | 0" | 0" |
| Floor | 0" | 0" |
| Top | 0" | 2" |
| Back | 0" | 0" |
| Front (to combustibles) | 36" | 36" |
Combustible Mantels
Combustible mantels must comply with the minimum vertical and maximum horizontal clearance dimensions specified in the installation manual (Figure 3.1). Measurements are taken from the top surface of the unit. The minimum documented values are 2 inches vertical offset at 2 inches horizontal, stepping out to 6 inches at 6 inches, and 12 inches horizontal at the outermost point. Refer to Figure 3.1 in the installation manual for the complete diagram before installing any combustible mantel.
⚠️ Front clearance requirement
Keep all combustible materials — including electrical cords, drapery, furnishings, pillows, bedding, papers, and clothing — at least 36 inches (3 feet / 0.9 m) from the front of the appliance at all times. This requirement applies regardless of whether the heater is on.
Installation Notes
Key requirements for all installation types
New Construction
Position the fireplace within the framing opening and level with shims if necessary. If installing on a sub-floor, shim the appliance to accommodate the finished flooring thickness — the framing height will need to increase accordingly. Attach the fireplace to the framing using the provided mounting brackets and screws.
Installation into Existing Factory-Built Fireplace
- Seal all drafts with non-fibrous insulation materials to prevent debris or water from the chimney entering the unit.
- Close or seal the chimney flue and close the damper (if applicable) to prevent rain infiltration.
- Do not install in an existing fireplace that is prone to dampness.
- A power connection must be accessible within the firebox or on an adjacent wall before finishing.
Chase Construction
A chase is a vertical enclosed structure built around the appliance. Chases must be constructed in the manner of all outside walls to prevent cold air drafting. The chase must not break the outside building envelope. Walls, ceiling, base plate, and cantilever floor of the chase must be insulated, with vapor and air infiltration barriers installed per regional codes.
Not Approved for Outdoor Use
The SimpliFire Built-In Electric Fireplace is approved for indoor use only. The appliance is not water-tight and must not be used outdoors or near showers, tubs, or other water sources.
Certification
Both models are certified by CSA International as Electric Air-Heaters (Fixed and Location-Dedicated Electric Room Heaters) to UL 2021 (3rd Edition) and CSA C22.2 No 46-13. This appliance is not intended for use as a primary heat source.

What are the framing dimensions for the SimpliFire Built-In Electric Fireplace?
Framing dimensions depend on model size and wiring voltage. For the 30-inch model (SF-BI30-EB): framing width 31-3/4", framing depth 11-5/8", framing height 27-1/4" at 120V or 29-1/4" at 240V. For the 36-inch model (SF-BI36-EB): framing width 37-3/4", framing depth 11-5/8", framing height 31-1/2" at 120V or 33-1/2" at 240V. If installing on a sub-floor, the height must be shimmed to accommodate the finished flooring thickness.
Why are the framing height dimensions different for 120V and 240V installations?
When the SimpliFire Built-In is hard-wired for 240V, a 2-inch clearance is required on the top of the unit, and the supplied stand-offs must be bent to a vertical position to maintain this clearance. This increases the required framing height by 2 inches compared to a 120V installation. Determine your wiring voltage before framing: the 30-inch model is 27-1/4" tall at 120V and 29-1/4" tall at 240V; the 36-inch model is 31-1/2" tall at 120V and 33-1/2" tall at 240V.
What electrical circuit does the SimpliFire Built-In Electric Fireplace require?
A 15-amp, 60Hz circuit is required for both 120V and 240V installations. A dedicated circuit is not required but is preferred to prevent circuit breaker trips. For hard-wired installations, use minimum 14 AWG copper Romex cable. The unit can also be connected via a 120V plug-in kit using a grounded NEMA-5-15P receptacle. All electrical connections must be performed by a qualified electrician.
What are the clearance to combustibles requirements for the SimpliFire Built-In?
The SimpliFire Built-In Series is a zero-clearance design at 120V. Sides: 0". Floor: 0". Back: 0". Top: 0" at 120V, 2" at 240V. Front clearance from combustibles: 36" for both voltages. Combustible mantels must comply with the minimum vertical and maximum horizontal dimensions in Figure 3.1 of the installation manual. Keep all combustibles at least 3 feet from the front of the appliance at all times.
Can the SimpliFire Built-In Electric Fireplace be installed in an existing fireplace?
Yes. The unit can be installed into an existing factory-built fireplace. Before installing: seal all drafts with non-fibrous insulation to prevent chimney debris from entering the unit; close or seal the chimney flue and damper; confirm the existing fireplace is not prone to dampness; and ensure a power connection is accessible within the firebox or on an adjacent wall. Do not install in an existing fireplace prone to dampness.
