SimpliFire Inception

Traditional masonry format with DigitalSpark™ Technology — one size, 36 inches

The Inception is SimpliFire's flagship traditional masonry-style electric fireplace. Available in one size only — 36 inches — it installs into new construction framing or attaches to a finished wall using the optional Wescott Mantel Kit (MK-WS-INC36), which requires no wall construction. The Inception is the only model in this comparison that uses DigitalSpark™ Technology, which renders digital footage of real flames rather than an animated LED loop. It is also the only model with Wi-Fi, IntelliFire App control, and voice assistant compatibility (Google Home and Amazon Alexa). A decorative front is required for operation: three options are available — the Folio, Halston, and Chateau Forge — each sold separately. When installed with the Wescott Mantel Kit, the Inception connects to a standard 120V outlet via the included power cord — no electrician required. Built-in installations are hard-wired only and support both 120V and 240V.

SimpliFire Built-In

Classic masonry format — installs into new construction or an existing factory-built fireplace

The SimpliFire Built-In (SF-BI30-EB and SF-BI36-EB) is the traditional masonry-style fireplace with the most installation flexibility in this lineup. The installation manual explicitly states it can be built into new construction framing or installed into an existing factory-built fireplace. It supports three voltage options — 120V, 208V, and 240V — with an on-unit voltage selector switch that must be correctly positioned before operation. Unlike the Inception, the Built-In uses remote and on-unit buttons only with no Wi-Fi or app control. One critical installation note: at 240V, a 2" clearance is required at the top of the unit, and supplied stand-offs must be bent into position to maintain this clearance.

⚠️

240V top clearance — installation-critical

When the Built-In is hard-wired for 240V, a clearance of 2 inches is required on the top of the unit. The supplied stand-offs on the top must be bent to a vertical position to maintain this clearance. This is not required at 120V or 208V. The clearance height dimension H1 also increases by 2 inches at 240V versus 120V for both models.

SimpliFire Scion Clean Face Linear

Flush-face linear electric fireplace — no visible heaters or framing around the glass

The Scion is SimpliFire's clean-face linear electric fireplace, designed to be installed flush with any finishing material so that no visible heaters or framing appear around the glass. It builds into new construction framing before the wall is finished, at a minimum framing depth of 7-5/8". The Scion supports Wi-Fi control confirmed in the manufacturer brochure. Available in three sizes — 43", 55", and 78" — with a uniform 15" viewing height across all sizes. All three sizes produce up to 5,000 BTU at 1,500W and offer 4 flame effects (blue, blue/orange, orange, orange/blue). The 78" model (SF-SC78-BK) is documented in the installation manual; confirm current availability before specifying.

SimpliFire Scion Trinity 3-Sided

Multi-configuration linear electric fireplace — single-sided, 2-sided corner, or 3-sided bay

The Scion Trinity is the only fireplace in this comparison that supports multiple viewing configurations from a single appliance. The installation manual documents six installation options: single-sided, 3-sided bay, 2-sided right corner, 2-sided left corner, wall mount with optional wall mount kit, and wall mount with optional floating mantel kit. The configuration is determined by trim selection — 2-inch trim or 1/2-inch trim for multi-sided viewing, flat side cover plates for single-sided. The framing dimensions are the same regardless of configuration: the opening size does not change between single-sided and 3-sided installations.

The Scion Trinity is available in 43" and 55" sizes. Both operate at 120V with 1,500W maximum, and support a plug-in connection as well as hard-wired installation — this plug-in flexibility applies to all configurations, including built-in installations, which is confirmed in the manufacturer brochure but not detailed in the installation manual beyond the wall mount context.

SimpliFire Allusion Platinum

Slide-in recessed linear fireplace — installs into a finished 2x6 wall, no new construction required

The Allusion Platinum is the only fireplace in this comparison that installs after the wall is finished. It slides into a framed opening in an existing 2x6 wall — no framing work required at the time of installation, provided the wall was originally built with 2x6 construction and the rough opening was framed to the correct dimensions. This makes it suitable for post-construction installations and renovations. It explicitly cannot be installed in 2x4 framed wall construction.

The Allusion Platinum operates at 120V only, with 1,500W maximum output. It uses remote and on-unit touch controls with no Wi-Fi or voice control capability. Available in 50", 60", and 72" widths, all sharing the same 5-5/8" body depth and 20-7/16" overall height including trim. The trim ring is shipped attached to the appliance and is included.

Common Questions Answered

Objective differences between series — all comparisons from documented specifications

Inception vs Built-In — What separates the two traditional-style fireplaces?

Both are traditional masonry-format built-in fireplaces and both support 120V and 240V. The primary documented differences are technology, controls, and depth. The Inception uses DigitalSpark™ Technology with 7 digital fire backgrounds and 13 ember bed colors, controlled via the IntelliFire App, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or remote. The Built-In uses LED flame with 1 flame style (per brochure), 1 ember bed color, and remote or on-unit buttons only — no Wi-Fi. The Inception requires a framing depth of 8-3/4"; the Built-In requires approximately 11-5/8". The Inception is one size (36"); the Built-In is available in 30" and 36". The Built-In also supports installation into an existing factory-built fireplace; the Inception does not document this installation type.

Scion vs Allusion Platinum — Built-in first or slide-in after?

The Scion builds into framing before the wall is finished, at a minimum depth of 7-5/8". The Allusion Platinum slides into a framed opening in an already-finished 2x6 wall, at a minimum wall thickness of 5-3/4". The Scion supports Wi-Fi control; the Allusion Platinum does not. The Scion is available in 43", 55", and 78" widths; the Allusion Platinum in 50", 60", and 72". Both operate at 120V and produce up to 5,000 BTU. For new construction or renovations where framing is not yet finished, the Scion is the documented built-in option. For installations into an existing finished wall, the Allusion Platinum is the documented slide-in option.

Scion Trinity vs Scion — When does the 3-sided configuration matter?

The standard Scion installs as a single-sided flush built-in only. The Scion Trinity supports single-sided, 2-sided corner (left or right), and 3-sided bay configurations from the same appliance, with configuration determined by trim selection at installation. The Scion Trinity has a minimum framing depth of 11-1/2" versus the Scion's 7-5/8", because the deeper appliance body is required to accommodate the side viewing areas. Both operate at 120V and share the same 1,500W wattage and 15A circuit requirement. The Scion Trinity also supports plug-in connection in addition to hard-wired; the Scion's installation manual documents hard-wired only for built-in installations.

Which series can be installed into an existing fireplace?

The Built-In series is the only SimpliFire series in this comparison that the installation manual explicitly documents for installation into an existing factory-built fireplace. The installation requires sealing all chimney drafts with non-fibrous insulation, closing or sealing the chimney flue and damper, and providing a power connection within the existing firebox or on an adjacent wall. The Inception, Scion, Scion Trinity, and Allusion Platinum do not document existing fireplace installation.

Flame Technology Comparison

DigitalSpark™ vs. standard LED — what each technology produces and why it matters

DigitalSpark™ Technology — Inception only

The Inception is the only SimpliFire model in this comparison that uses DigitalSpark™ Technology. SimpliFire describes it as "digital footage of real flames for a dynamic and natural-looking fire." Rather than generating a flame image through an LED animation loop, DigitalSpark™ displays actual recorded video footage of a real fire on a high-resolution digital display. The result is a flame that behaves the way a real fire does — irregular, non-repeating, and responsive — rather than following the predictable cycle of a programmed LED pattern.

The Inception pairs this display with a physical media bed: four individually positioned logs in a refractory-lined cavity with black embers. The combination of the digital flame overhead and the physical log set below is what gives the Inception its traditional hearth character. Buyers who compare the Inception to a standard LED electric fireplace side by side consistently describe the difference as immediately visible — the flame on a DigitalSpark™ unit does not repeat, does not pulse on a fixed interval, and does not produce the uniform glow that signals an LED animation.

Standard LED Flame — Built-In, Scion, Scion Trinity, Allusion Platinum

The Built-In, Scion, Scion Trinity, and Allusion Platinum all use LED flame technology. LED flame systems use light-emitting diodes directed at a reflective or translucent media bed — typically crystals, logs, or embers — to create a flame appearance. The flame is generated by the lighting effect on the media rather than by displaying video footage. Modern LED flame systems can produce convincing results, particularly at longer viewing distances, and offer a wider range of color customization than earlier LED designs.

The practical trade-off is that LED animations are programmed cycles. Buyers who spend extended time with an LED unit will eventually notice the repetition in the flame pattern. For buyers primarily interested in ambient light and supplemental heat rather than the most realistic possible fire appearance, the LED units offer the same core function at a lower price point, with a broader range of ember bed colors and, in some models, greater installation flexibility.

Practical guidance for buyers comparing these technologies

If the primary purchase driver is the most realistic possible flame appearance — one that reads as a real fire rather than an appliance — the Inception with DigitalSpark™ is the only model in this lineup that provides it. If the primary driver is a clean linear look, a specific size range, post-construction installation, or budget, the LED-based series cover those needs with the same heat output, the same clearance requirements, and the same warranty.

The Scion Trinity has the broadest installation flexibility of any series in this comparison, supporting four distinct configurations from a single appliance: single-sided, 2-sided corner (left or right), 3-sided bay, and wall-mount. The Allusion Platinum is the only model that installs into a finished wall without any new construction — making it the right choice when framing is already complete and wall opening access is the constraint. The Built-In is the only model documented for installation into an existing factory-built fireplace. The Inception and Built-In require construction framing to be built before the wall is finished, with the Inception also offering the optional Wescott Mantel Kit as a finished-wall alternative.

📐

Wall-mount kit availability varies by series

The Inception's Wescott Mantel Kit (MK-WS-INC36) and the Scion Trinity's optional wall mount kit are separate products not included with the appliance. The Allusion Platinum's Boyd Build-out Kit is documented for the 50" model only — compatibility with 60" and 72" sizes was not confirmed in the reviewed manufacturer documentation.

Plain-English Guidance

Which models can plug into a standard outlet? The Built-In (at 120V with the optional plug-in kit), the Scion Trinity, and the Allusion Platinum can use a plug-in connection. The Inception can also plug in — but only when installed with the optional Wescott Mantel Kit (MK-WS-INC36), which includes a power cord and connects to a standard grounded 120V outlet with no electrician required. Built-in Inception installations are hard-wired only and require a qualified electrician. The Scion's installation manual documents hard-wired connection for built-in installations.

Which models support 240V for higher heat output? The Inception and Built-In both support 240V and will produce significantly more heat at that voltage — 3,000W and 2,800W respectively versus 1,500W at 120V. The Scion, Scion Trinity, and Allusion Platinum are 120V only and are not documented for 240V operation.

What does "dedicated circuit" mean? A dedicated circuit serves only one appliance — no other outlets or devices share the breaker. No SimpliFire series in this comparison requires a dedicated circuit, but all five manuals recommend one to prevent breaker trips when other appliances are running on the same circuit. At 1,500W, any of the 120V models drawing full power will consume the majority of a 15A circuit's capacity.

⚠️

Built-In 240V: voltage selector switch is installation-critical

The Built-In requires a manual voltage selector switch to be set to the correct position (120V or 240V) before operation. The switch is located behind the glass on the ceiling of the unit. Failure to set it correctly can damage the product. Additionally, at 240V, the supplied stand-offs on the top of the unit must be bent to a vertical position to maintain the required 2" top clearance. Neither step is required for the Inception, which uses an automatic junction box that detects voltage without any manual adjustment.

Inception: decorative front is required — order at time of purchase

The Inception is the only model in this comparison where the decorative front is both required for safe operation and sold separately. The installation manual states it "requires an installed decorative front to act as a barrier preventing direct contact with the heater" and that "the appliance must not be operated with the front removed." Three fronts are compatible: Folio (SF-FOL-36, inside-fit only), Halston (SF-HAL-36), and Chateau Forge (SF-CHAF-36). Each must be ordered at the time of appliance purchase. The choice of front also affects finished wall opening dimensions — confirm front selection before finalizing framing.

Safety and Clearance Requirements

Universal requirements and series-specific clearance differences

Universal Requirements — All Five Series

  • All five series are 100% electric and require no venting, no gas line, and no chimney connection.
  • All five series are designated indoor-only. Each installation manual explicitly states "Do not use outdoors."
  • All five series are classified as supplemental heat sources — not intended for use as a primary heat source in residential heating calculations.
  • All five series require combustibles (furniture, drapery, bedding, clothing, curtains) to be kept at least 3 ft. (0.9 m) from the front of the appliance.
  • All five series require all electrical connections to be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with local codes and the NFPA 70 National Electric Code.
  • No series permits the use of extension cords or relocatable power strips (Built-In documents an exception for heavy-gauge extension cords as a last resort only — see manual for specifics).

Clearance to Combustibles by Series

TV above appliance No required clearance (validate at installation) Not specified in documentation Not specified in documentation Not specified in documentation Not specified in documentation Not specified in documentation

All five series are zero-clearance designs at the sides, floor, back, and top — with one critical exception: the Built-In requires 2 inches of clearance at the top when hard-wired for 240V. This requires the supplied stand-offs to be bent to a vertical position before the wall is finished. At 120V, the Built-In returns to zero clearance at the top. The Allusion Platinum is the only series with a documented mantel clearance value (5/8") in addition to zero clearance at sides, back, and floor. All series maintain the same 36" front clearance to combustibles regardless of voltage.

ℹ️

Finishing materials and airflow

All five series require that facing and finishing materials do not block the appliance's air intakes or heater discharge openings. For the Inception specifically, finishing materials must not interfere with the removal of the decorative front or access for service. The Scion and Scion Trinity require insulation and loose materials to be secured to maintain air clearance around the appliance for proper thermostat sensor performance.

Every SimpliFire series in this comparison produces the same core result: electric-powered flames with no venting and no gas line required, backed by the same 2-year warranty. The decision between them turns on installation constraints, voltage access, and visual priorities. The following scenarios are based on the documented specifications in this guide.

By Installation Situation

New construction or open framing available Inception, Built-In, Scion, or Scion Trinity — all four require framing to be built before the wall is finished. Choose based on style, depth, and voltage requirements.
Existing finished wall, no construction work Allusion Platinum (slide-in into finished 2x6 wall) or optional wall-mount kits for the Inception (Wescott Mantel Kit) and Scion Trinity (wall mount kit). Allusion Platinum requires no new framing; the mantel kits attach to the finished wall surface.
Existing masonry or factory-built fireplace Built-In only — the only series the installation manual explicitly documents for installation into an existing factory-built fireplace opening.
Corner or bay wall, not a flat wall Scion Trinity only — the only series with documented 2-sided corner and 3-sided bay configurations.
Shallowest possible installation depth Allusion Platinum at 5-3/4" minimum finished wall thickness (6" rough opening depth). Next shallowest is the Scion at 7-5/8" minimum framing depth. The Allusion Platinum requires 2x6 framing — confirm before specifying.
Wall is already built with 2x4 framing None of the slide-in or recessed models in this comparison are documented for 2x4 walls. The Allusion Platinum explicitly prohibits 2x4 installation. The built-in models (Inception, Built-In, Scion, Scion Trinity) require purpose-built framing regardless of existing wall construction.

By Voltage and Electrical Access

Standard 120V outlet only available All five series operate at 120V. The Scion, Scion Trinity, and Allusion Platinum are 120V only. The Inception and Built-In also accept higher voltages but will work at 120V with reduced heat output.
Want maximum heat output — 240V available Inception at 3,000W (240V) or Built-In at 2,800W (240V). Both produce approximately double the heat of the 120V-only models. A qualified electrician must install the wiring.
Need plug-in capability (no hardwiring) Allusion Platinum (plug-in at 120V), Built-In (plug-in kit at 120V), Scion Trinity (plug-in available), or Inception with the optional Wescott Mantel Kit (plug-in at 120V via included power cord — no electrician required). Built-in Inception installations are hard-wired only.

By Visual and Feature Priority

Most realistic flame appearance Inception — the only model using DigitalSpark™ Technology, which displays digital footage of real flames rather than an LED animation. Paired with a physical log and ember media bed in a refractory-lined cavity.
Traditional masonry firebox style Inception (36") or Built-In (30" or 36") — both present as a traditional hearth opening with logs and ember media.
Clean flush linear look — no visible framing Scion or Scion Trinity — both designed to sit flush with any finishing material with no visible heaters or framing around the glass.
Wi-Fi and voice assistant control Inception (IntelliFire App, Google Home, Amazon Alexa) or Scion (Wi-Fi confirmed in manufacturer brochure). The Built-In, Scion Trinity, and Allusion Platinum use remote and on-unit buttons only.
Widest available size Scion at up to 78" (SF-SC78-BK) or Allusion Platinum at up to 72" (SF-ALLP72-BK). The Inception is one size only (36"). The Built-In tops at 36". The Scion Trinity tops at 55".
Most ember bed color customization Scion and Allusion Platinum — both offer 14 color themes (13 individual colors plus a continuously rotating option). The Scion Trinity offers 13 colors. The Built-In offers 1 ember bed color.

Frequently Asked Questions

All answers sourced from manufacturer documentation

What is the difference between the SimpliFire Scion and the Allusion Platinum?

The Scion is a built-in fireplace installed before the wall is finished, supports Wi-Fi and voice control, operates at 120V, and produces up to 5,000 BTU. The Allusion Platinum slides into a framed opening in an already-finished 2x6 wall, uses remote and on-unit buttons only with no Wi-Fi, and also operates at 120V producing up to 5,000 BTU. Both are black finish, indoor-only fireplaces backed by a 2-year HHT limited warranty. The Allusion Platinum requires a minimum wall thickness of 5-3/4" and cannot be installed in 2x4 framed walls.

Which SimpliFire electric fireplace produces the most heat?

The Inception and Built-In series both support 120V, 208V, and 240V operation and reach the highest documented wattage in this comparison. The Inception produces 3,000W at 240V; the Built-In produces 2,800W at 240V. The Scion, Scion Trinity, and Allusion Platinum are all 120V appliances with a maximum of 1,500W. All series include flame-only mode with the heater off.

Which SimpliFire electric fireplace has the shallowest installation depth?

The Allusion Platinum has the shallowest minimum framing depth at 5-3/4 inches finished wall thickness (6" rough opening depth), requiring a 2x6 framed wall. In ascending order of minimum framing depth: Allusion Platinum at 5-3/4", Scion at 7-5/8", Inception at 8-3/4", Scion Trinity at 11-1/2", and Built-In at approximately 11-5/8". The Allusion Platinum is the only model that slides into a finished wall — it requires no new framing at the time of installation, provided the wall was originally built with 2x6 construction.

Does SimpliFire require venting for any of its electric fireplaces?

No. All SimpliFire electric fireplaces on this page are 100% electric and require no venting, no gas line, and no chimney connection. Each installation manual explicitly states the appliance must not be used outdoors. All models are supplemental heat sources and are not intended for use as a primary heat source in residential heating calculations.

What warranty do SimpliFire electric fireplaces carry?

All SimpliFire electric fireplaces are manufactured by Hearth and Home Technologies (HHT) and carry HHT's limited warranty covering all parts for 2 years from the date of installation. Purchased replacement parts and optional accessories are covered for 1 year with no labor. The warranty is transferable to subsequent owners but the period is not extended for any transfer. Products must be purchased from an HHT authorized dealer or distributor. The warranty is only valid while the product remains at the site of original installation.

Can the SimpliFire Scion be installed without any construction work?

No. The Scion is designed to be built into the wall and requires standard new construction framing to be completed before the wall is finished. It is not a slide-in or surface-mount model. If you need a SimpliFire electric fireplace that installs into an existing finished wall without construction, the Allusion Platinum is the correct choice — it slides into a framed opening in a finished 2x6 wall. Alternatively, the Scion Trinity is available with an optional wall mount kit that attaches to a finished wall surface.

Does the SimpliFire Inception work with Alexa or Google Home?

Yes. The Inception is the only SimpliFire series in this comparison with confirmed voice assistant compatibility. The installation manual states the appliance can be operated by the IntelliFire App or compatible voice assistants, and specifically confirms Google Home and Amazon Alexa after the Wi-Fi connection is established. Voice control requires an active Wi-Fi connection and setup through the IntelliFire App. The Built-In, Scion Trinity, and Allusion Platinum do not have Wi-Fi or voice control capability. The Scion has Wi-Fi confirmed in the manufacturer brochure but the specific voice assistant compatibility is not confirmed in the reviewed documentation for that series.

What is the difference between DigitalSpark™ and a standard LED electric fireplace?

DigitalSpark™ Technology, used exclusively in the Inception within this lineup, displays digital footage of real flames on a high-resolution screen. The flame is non-repeating video of an actual fire — it does not cycle through a programmed animation loop. Standard LED fireplaces (Built-In, Scion, Scion Trinity, Allusion Platinum) generate the flame appearance by directing LED light at a reflective or physical media bed such as crystals, logs, or embers. The LED animation follows a programmed pattern that eventually repeats. For buyers who spend extended time viewing the fireplace up close, the difference between recorded footage and an LED animation is typically visible. For buyers primarily interested in ambient lighting and supplemental heat rather than flame realism, both technologies serve the same functional purpose.

Can the SimpliFire Inception or Built-In be installed in an existing fireplace opening?

The Built-In series is the only SimpliFire model in this comparison that the installation manual explicitly documents for installation into an existing factory-built fireplace. The installation requires sealing chimney drafts with non-fibrous insulation, closing the chimney flue and damper, and routing power to the firebox or an adjacent wall. The Inception's installation manual does not document installation into an existing fireplace — it documents new construction framing or the optional Wescott Mantel Kit on a finished wall only. Neither model is documented for installation into an existing masonry fireplace.

Does the SimpliFire Inception need to be hardwired by an electrician?

It depends on the installation method. Built-in installations — framed into a wall before it is finished — require permanent hard-wired electrical connections by a qualified electrician, at either 120V or 240V. The optional Wescott Mantel Kit (MK-WS-INC36) is an alternative that requires no construction and no electrician: it includes a power cord and connects to a standard grounded 120V outlet. Wescott Mantel Kit installations operate at 120V only (up to 5,000 BTU). Refer to HHT document 4200-935 for Mantel Kit outlet placement requirements.
