Broilmaster Premium Series Gas Grill Size & Mounting Guide

Head selection, mounting options, clearances, and gas connection for the Broilmaster Premium Series — P3 (695 sq in) and P4 (473 sq in) Bow Tie Burner heads in cart, post, and built-in configurations.

At a Glance

Two head sizes, four mounting options. Pick the head (P3 = 695 sq in or P4 = 473 sq in) and the mounting (cart, in-ground post, patio post, or built-in via BHAX2) independently.

Same Bow Tie Burner, same BTU. Both P3 and P4 heads use the patented stainless steel Bow Tie Burner at 40,000 BTU with separate left/right control. The size difference is cooking area, not heat output.

Minimum clearances: 16″ to sides, 18″ to rear, both measured to combustibles. No combustible overhead — no carports, covered porches, awnings, or overhangs.

Natural gas inlet pressure: 7.0″ WC. Total NG demand is 40,000 BTU per Premium head. Size the supply line for 40,000 BTU plus any other appliances on the same gas supply.

One AA battery for ignition — no 120V outlet required. The Electric Ignitor draws from a single AA alkaline battery. The most common "burner won't light" complaint on Broilmaster Premium grills is a dead battery.

Package SKUs save the head-plus-base coordination step. P3PK5/N (cart), P3PK6N (in-ground post), and P3PK7N (patio post) bundle a P3X head with a coordinated base at a package price.

How to Measure Your Opening

What to measure depends on the mounting type — built-in, cart, or post

Premium Series sizing has two parts: pick the grill head, then pick the mounting. The measurements that matter depend on the mounting type:

  • Built-in installation (using the BHAX2 stainless steel built-in kit): measure the rough opening width, depth, and drop into the island. The head sits in the BHAX2 sleeve, which sets the cutout dimensions and protects the surrounding combustible framing.
  • Cart installation (PCB-1, DCB-1, or PSCB-1 cart): measure the patio footprint where the cart will sit, plus the 16-inch side and 18-inch rear clearance to any combustible material. No island cutout needed.
  • In-ground post installation (SS48-G or BL48-G): measure the post location and confirm clearance to combustible structures. The post anchors below the patio surface in concrete; you'll need a hole approximately 12″ diameter × 18-24″ deep depending on local frost-line code.
  • Patio post installation (SS26-P or BL26-P): measure the bolt-down location on the existing patio. The cast iron base bolts directly to the slab — no concrete pour required.

For all four mountings, also confirm the clearance envelope: 16 inches from each side of the grill to any combustible material, 18 inches from the back of the grill to any combustible material, and zero combustible overhead (no carport, awning, covered porch, or overhang).

Mounting Selection

Cart, in-ground post, patio post, or built-in

Premium Series grill heads are sold separately from their mounting bases — the head decision and the base decision are independent. Package SKUs (P3PK5/N, P3PK6N, P3PK7N) bundle a head and a base at a coordinated price for the most common configurations.

Built-in (BHAX2)

The Broilmaster BHAX2 stainless steel built-in kit fits the P3X (and H3X) grill heads for installation into a custom outdoor kitchen island. The built-in kit provides the cutout sleeve, support flange, and necessary hardware. Use of the BHAX2 also opens compatibility with other Broilmaster stainless steel built-in components: the Door Kit (storage door access), the Tilt-Out LP Tank Door (for built-in propane installations), and the Vent Register Kit (required for built-in propane installations).

BHAX2 cutout dimensions

BHAX2 specific cutout dimensions and rough-opening drawings are not in the Broilmaster Premium owner's manual we have on hand — the BHAX2 ships with its own installation document. Confirm the BHAX2 cutout drawings directly with the dealer or Broilmaster before framing the island opening.

Cutout Dimensions

Built-in cutouts and per-head footprint

For built-in island installations, the BHAX2 stainless steel built-in kit is the source of truth for cutout dimensions. The BHAX2 ships with a dedicated installation document that includes the rough-opening drawings — confirm with your dealer or Broilmaster directly before you frame the island opening.

For non-built-in installations (cart, in-ground post, patio post), there is no rough opening to cut — you only need to confirm the surface footprint of the cart base or post anchor and the surrounding clearance envelope.

Head footprint reference

Clearance Requirements

Minimum distances from the grill body to any combustible material

Per Broilmaster's installation requirements, the grill must maintain the following minimum clearances from the body of the grill to any combustible material:

Sides16 inches min
Rear18 inches min
Overhead (combustible)Not permitted

Combustible materials include — but are not limited to — wood-frame walls, fences, patio furniture, the wall of the home, vinyl siding, wood decking, and any covered overhead structure. Stone, masonry, concrete, and properly rated stainless steel are not combustible.

The clearance envelope applies regardless of mounting type. A cart-mounted Premium grill on a patio still needs 16 inches to each side and 18 inches to the rear; a post-mounted grill in an open patio still needs the same envelope to any combustible structure within range.

Outdoor use only

The Broilmaster Premium grill is for outdoor use only. Never install or operate the grill in any building, garage, recreational vehicle, boat, or other enclosed area. The grill produces carbon monoxide; using it indoors can be fatal. The grill should not be installed where gasoline or other flammable materials are stored.

Gas Connection

Natural gas pressure, propane setup, BTU demand, and line sizing

Natural gas (NG)

Per the Broilmaster Premium owner's manual, the natural gas inlet pressure at the grill should be set to 7.0 inches water column (7.0″ WC). Connect cart-mounted natural gas grills to a pre-installed gas supply line using the 12-foot flexible hose and quick-disconnect kit available from the dealer. Built-in installations should run a hard-piped supply with a manual shutoff valve isolated from the grill before any leak test.

Total natural gas BTU demand:

  • P3 head (P3XN, P3XFN, P3PK5N, P3PK6N, P3PK7N): 40,000 BTU/hr at peak.
  • P4 head (P4XN, P4XFN): 40,000 BTU/hr at peak.

Both head sizes pull the same 40,000 BTU on natural gas — the difference between P3 and P4 is cooking area, not heat output. Size the supply line based on the peak demand of the grill (40,000 BTU) plus any other appliances drawing from the same supply (range, water heater, dryer, fire feature). Consult a licensed gas plumber for the appropriate pipe diameter and length.

Propane (LP)

The Premium propane configuration uses a 20-pound LP cylinder. For cart-mounted setups, the cylinder mounts in the cart's cylinder bracket. For built-in setups, the cylinder lives in a code-compliant cylinder enclosure inside the island; the Broilmaster Tilt-Out LP Tank Door is the matching access component. Per the manual, do not use a propane gas cylinder with a capacity greater than 20 pounds with this grill.

If the grill is installed in an island enclosure with a propane cylinder, the enclosure must include vent register openings — Broilmaster sells a Vent Register Kit as a stainless steel built-in component. The cylinder must be arranged upright for vapor withdrawal, and the enclosure must remain free of obstructions to combustion-air ventilation.

Pressure testing

The grill and its individual shutoff valve must be disconnected from the gas supply piping system during any system pressure testing at test pressures in excess of 1/2 PSIG. The grill must be isolated from the gas supply piping system by closing its individual manual shutoff valve during any pressure testing of the gas supply piping system at test pressures equal to or less than 1/2 PSIG.

Island Planning Notes

For built-in (BHAX2) installations only — framing, access panel, ventilation

Framing materials

The 16-inch side and 18-inch rear clearances apply to combustible framing inside the island. If you build the island with non-combustible framing — masonry block, concrete, prefabricated stainless steel — these clearances do not apply to the framing itself, but the surrounding combustibles around the island still need the same envelope. Most prefab outdoor kitchen islands are designed to non-combustible specs from the supplier.

The BHAX2 built-in kit provides the stainless steel sleeve that protects the head's heat zone from the surrounding island construction, but does not replace the clearance requirement for combustible materials in the broader install location.

Access panel

For built-in propane installations, plan a code-compliant access door for cylinder swap-out. The Broilmaster Door Kit is the stainless steel access panel; the Tilt-Out LP Tank Door is the integrated cylinder access option. Both carry the Limited Lifetime warranty against rust-through alongside the rest of the stainless built-in components.

Ventilation register requirements

For propane installations inside an island enclosure, vent register openings are required at the bottom and top of the enclosure — the bottom vent allows propane (which is heavier than air) to escape if a leak occurs, and the top vent allows combustion air to circulate. The Broilmaster Vent Register Kit is the stainless steel matching-pair register accessory for built-in Premium configurations.

Weight

The Premium head is heavy-duty cast aluminum with stainless steel internals. Exact dry shipping weights are not in the current Premium owner's manual we have on hand; expect a freight class shipment with palletized delivery. Plan island countertop support around granite/quartz/concrete typical loading — the head weight is well within standard outdoor-kitchen counter capacity but the rough opening (when using the BHAX2 built-in kit) reduces effective span, so consider counter overhang and unsupported edges around the cutout.

FAQ

Top installation questions for the Broilmaster Premium Series

How do I choose between the Broilmaster P3 and P4 grill heads?

The P3 head (P3X, P3XN, P3XF, P3XFN) is 695 sq in of total cooking area; the P4 head (P4X, P4XN, P4XF, P4XFN) is 473 sq in. Both run at 40,000 BTU on a single stainless steel Bow Tie Burner with separate left/right control. Multi-level stainless steel cooking grids adjust to three levels on P3 and two levels on P4. Pick P3 for households of 4+ or any rotisserie use; pick P4 for compact patios, smaller households, and lower entry price into the Bow Tie Burner architecture. Both heads fit the same Broilmaster mountings.

What mounting options are available for the Broilmaster Premium grill?

Four mounting options. Cart: PCB-1 stainless steel, DCB-1 black painted steel, or PSCB-1 stainless steel storage cart. In-ground post: SS48-G stainless or BL48-G black painted, anchored below the patio surface in concrete. Patio post with cast iron base: SS26-P stainless or BL26-P black painted, bolted to existing patio. Built-in: BHAX2 stainless steel built-in kit for P3X / H3X grill heads. Package SKUs (P3PK5/N, P3PK6N, P3PK7N) bundle a head and a base together at a coordinated price.

What clearances does a Broilmaster Premium grill need?

Per Broilmaster installation requirements, a minimum clearance of 16 inches is required from the sides of the grill to any combustible material, and a minimum clearance of 18 inches is required from the back of the grill to any combustible material. The grill cannot be installed under combustible overhead materials such as carports, covered porches, awnings, or overhangs. Combustible materials include walls, fences, patio furniture, and the wall of the home. The 16/18 envelope applies whether the grill is cart-mounted, post-mounted, or installed in a built-in island.

Does the Broilmaster Premium grill need a battery?

Yes. The Broilmaster Premium and Super Premium grills use an Electric Ignitor that requires one AA alkaline battery. The battery powers the ignition spark only — there is no other electrical demand on the grill itself. Battery placement is at the back of the control panel and is documented in the owner's manual. If a burner fails to light after several attempts, the most common cause is a dead AA battery; replace before troubleshooting other components. (See the Broilmaster grill comparison guide for the full ignition breakdown across all four series.)
