Overview

All dimensions from the Modern Flames installation manual

This guide covers the physical dimensions, framing requirements, and electrical specifications for the Modern Flames Orion Multi in all five sizes. The Orion Multi is available in 52", 60", 76", 100", and 120" widths and supports six distinct installation configurations: single-sided built-in, left corner, right corner, three-sided bay, partial recess, and wall mount.

All values on this page are sourced directly from the Modern Flames installation manual. Use the framing tables below to plan your rough-in opening before ordering. If you are comparing the Orion Multi against other Modern Flames series, see the Modern Flames comparison guide.

Not doing your own framing?

Send this page to your installer β€” they will know exactly how to use it. The key numbers they need: minimum wall depth is 9" for fully recessed, a dedicated 20-amp circuit is required, and the electrical supply must enter at the top right of the framed opening. Everything else on this page is for them.

Before cutting custom finishes

Modern Flames recommends verifying the actual appliance dimensions before cutting granite, marble, veneer, or other custom finishes. Consult your local builder prior to installation.

Installation Types

All configurations supported by the Orion Multi

The Orion Multi supports six installation configurations. Each affects how the side panels are treated and which framing dimensions apply.

  • Single-Sided Built-In (Clean Face) β€” fully recessed into a framed wall opening. Both side glass panels are covered by the included side plates. Standard framing dimensions apply.
  • Left Corner β€” one side glass panel exposed on the left. The left-side plate is removed and a drywall stop is installed in its place. Use the 3-Sided/Bay framing width from the table below.
  • Right Corner β€” one side glass panel exposed on the right. Same procedure as left corner, mirrored. Use the 3-Sided/Bay framing width.
  • Three-Sided / Bay β€” both side glass panels exposed. Both side plates are removed and drywall stops installed on each side. Use the 3-Sided/Bay framing width column in the table below.
  • Partial Recess β€” the unit sits partially within the wall. Side plates are removed and side trim is installed. Minimum wall recess depth is 2-5/8". See the Partial Recess section for dedicated framing dimensions.
  • Wall Mount β€” surface-mounted using the included wall bracket. When wall-mounted flush, the flame face projects only 1-1/2" from the wall surface. Must be secured to a minimum of two wall studs.
⚠️

Use the included wall bracket only

The manufacturer requires use of the included wall mount bracket only. Never substitute a bracket from another manufacturer. The bracket must be level with hooks facing upward and secured to a minimum of two studs.

Partial Recess Framing Dimensions

All dimensions from the Modern Flames installation manual

Partial recess installation seats the unit partially into the wall with the front face projecting beyond the finished wall surface. Side plates are removed and side trim is installed. Use the finished opening dimensions below β€” these differ from the standard built-in framing table above.

Model Finished Opening W Finished Opening H Recess Depth (min)
OR52-MULTI (52") 50-15/16" 24-9/16" 2-5/8" min.
OR60-MULTI (60") 59-7/16" 24-9/16" 2-5/8" min.

Dedicated circuit required for partial recess

A dedicated 20-amp circuit breaker is required for partial recess installation, as it is for all other installation types. Electrical must be provided at the top right of the framed opening.

Electrical Requirements

All values from the Modern Flames installation manual

Standard Configuration β€” 120V / 5,000 BTU

Voltage110~120V
Wattage1,465W
Heat Output5,000 BTU
Circuit20A dedicated

Optional High-Output Configuration β€” 240V / 10,000 BTU

Voltage220~240V
Wattage2,930W
Heat Output10,000 BTU
Circuit20A 2-pole dedicated

All installation types require hardwiring to a dedicated circuit by a qualified electrician. The electrical supply point must be located at the top right of the framed opening. No other appliances may share the circuit. Installation must conform to local electrical codes; in the absence of local codes, CSA C22.1 applies in Canada and ANSI/NFPA 70 in the USA.

The 240V configuration requires a 4-wire connection: black (L1), red (L2), white (neutral), and green/bare copper (ground). The 220~240V supply must include a neutral conductor.

⚠️ 2-Pole breaker required for 10,000 BTU operation

Operating the Orion Multi at 10,000 BTU requires a dedicated 20-amp 2-pole circuit breaker. The standard 120V configuration uses a single-pole 20-amp circuit. Never exceed the rated amperage for the circuit and never use an extension cord or power strip with this appliance.

Clearances & Safety Requirements

All values from the Modern Flames installation manual

The installation manual states that the selected location must be at least 36 inches (914mm) from combustible materials, including curtain drapes, furniture, bedding, and paper. Keep combustible materials at least 3 feet (0.9m) from the front of the heater and away from the sides and rear.

Specific numeric clearances for the top, sides, rear, bottom, and ceiling are not specified in the manufacturer installation manual. Follow all applicable local building codes for minimum clearances to combustibles for electric fireplace installations.

⚠️ Indoor use only

The manufacturer states: "INDOOR use only! NEVER use this heater outdoors! Doing so may result in electric shock!" This appliance is approved for indoor use only and must not be installed in bathrooms, laundry rooms, or any location where it could contact water.

Supplemental heat only

This product is not intended to be a primary heat source. It is for supplemental heating only. Mobile home installation approval status is not specified in the manufacturer documentation.

❓

Frequently Asked Questions

All answers sourced from manufacturer documentation

What is the minimum framing depth for the Orion Multi built-in installation?

The Orion Multi requires a minimum framing depth of 9 inches for a fully recessed built-in installation. For partial recess installation, the minimum wall recess depth is 2-5/8 inches. All five sizes share these same minimum depth requirements.

What electrical circuit does the Modern Flames Orion Multi require?

The Orion Multi requires a dedicated 20-amp circuit. At 120V it draws 1,465 watts (5,000 BTU). It can optionally be wired for 240V to deliver 2,930 watts (10,000 BTU), which requires a dedicated 20-amp 2-pole circuit breaker. No other appliances may share the circuit. Installation must be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with local electrical codes.

Can the Orion Multi be installed in a corner?

Yes. The Orion Multi supports left corner, right corner, and three-sided bay installations in addition to standard single-sided built-in and wall-mount. Corner and bay configurations require exposing one or both side glass panels using the included drywall stops. Framing width requirements differ slightly for 3-sided/bay installation β€” see the framing dimensions table for the exact width for each model and configuration.

What is the viewing area size of the Orion Multi?

The viewing area height is 18-7/16 inches across all five Orion Multi sizes. Viewing area width varies by model: 50-1/8 inches (52"), 58-5/8 inches (60"), 74-7/16 inches (76"), 98-3/4 inches (100"), and 123 inches (120").

Does the Orion Multi need to be hardwired or can it plug in?

Built-in, partial recess, and wall-mount installations all require hardwiring to a dedicated circuit by a qualified electrician. Extension cords and power strips must never be used. Installation must conform to local electrical codes β€” CSA C22.1 in Canada or ANSI/NFPA 70 in the USA where local codes do not apply.
