Primo Ceramic Grill Comparison Guide

A side-by-side analysis of every Primo ceramic kamado we carry — the Junior Oval, Round, Large Oval, X-Large Oval, XX-Large Oval, and the X-Large Jack Daniel's Edition — covering cooking area, footprint, weight, configuration (Head Only vs All-In-One), and how to pick the right size and setup for your install.

At a Glance

One product family, five grill sizes, two configurations each. Every Primo we carry is a charcoal-fueled ceramic kamado built around the Patented Oval Design (Junior, Large, X-Large, and XX-Large) or the traditional round kamado footprint (Round). Each size sells as a Head Only grill or as an All-In-One package that adds the Cradle Stand, side tables, ash tool, and grate lifter ready to grill out of the box.

Same warranty across the whole lineup. Limited Lifetime coverage (backed by a 20-year guarantee) on ceramic parts, 5 years on metal parts (excluding cast iron), 1 year on cast iron parts and cooking grates, 30 days on thermometers and felt gaskets. Coverage is original-purchaser only; claims go to warranty@primogrill.com with photo documentation.

The oval shape is the differentiator. Primo's four Oval models (Junior, Large, X-Large, XX-Large) deliver True Two-Zone Cooking simultaneously — direct heat on one side of the firebox, indirect on the other — with Reversible Cooking Grates, optional Heat Deflector Plates, an optional Fire Box Divider, and an Extension Rack system that adds 30–65% more cooking area. The Round Charcoal model keeps Primo's Premium-Grade Ceramics in the traditional round kamado footprint.

Post-2019 upgrades are standard on the current lineup. Since the Empire Comfort Systems acquisition, every Primo ships with the Easy Lift Hinge (reduces lid-lift force by 70%), a 6-position aluminum damper top with all-weather hood, a 5-position lower air control slider for precise temperature management, and Ceramic Retainer Clips integrated into the handle. Temperature range is 151°–850°F+ on every model.

69+ cooking configurations from one grill. The combination of Reversible Cooking Grates, Heat Deflector Plates and Racks, the Extension Rack system, and the Fire Box Divider lets a single Primo function as a high-heat grill, a low-and-slow smoker, a wood-fired oven for pizza, and a roasting oven — direct or indirect, single zone or simultaneous two-zone.

X-Large Jack Daniel's Edition is cosmetic only. The PGCXLHJ Jack Daniel's Edition uses the identical X-Large Oval grill body, cooking area, weight, dimensions, and warranty as the standard PGCXLH. The difference is the Jack Daniel's branding fired into the ceramic glaze and the optional Jack Daniel's grill table.

The Primo Brand

Founded 1996 · acquired by Empire Comfort Systems 2019 · Belleville, Illinois

Primo Ceramic Grills was founded in 1996 by George Samaras, who set out to build the highest-grade ceramic kamado on the market. In 2002, George introduced the Patented Oval Design — the structural feature that still distinguishes Primo from every other ceramic kamado on the market today. In the fall of 2019, Primo was acquired by Empire Comfort Systems, a 4th-generation family-owned business established in 1932 and headquartered in Belleville, Illinois. Empire also manufactures gas and wood heating appliances and gas grills, and has reinvested in the Primo product line — adding the Easy Lift Hinge, the 6-position aluminum damper top, the 5-position lower air control slider, and the Ceramic Retainer Clips in the years since the acquisition.

Brand position: Primo is the only ceramic kamado built around an oval body, and the oval body is the entire point. The shape creates two distinct cooking zones along the long axis of the firebox so a single Primo can sear steaks over direct heat on one side while slow-roasting vegetables or smoking ribs on the indirect side at the same time. Combined with Reversible Cooking Grates, Heat Deflector Plates, an optional Fire Box Divider, and the Extension Rack system, this produces more than 69 documented cooking configurations — grill, smoker, wood-fired oven, and roasting oven from one cooker.

The lineup we carry is a single product page with eleven variants spanning five grill families: the Junior Oval, the Round, the Large Oval, the X-Large Oval, the XX-Large Oval, and the X-Large Oval Jack Daniel's Edition — each available as a Head Only grill or as an All-In-One package ready to grill out of the box. The Five Grill Families

What actually distinguishes Junior, Round, Large, X-Large, and XX-Large

The five Primo grill families differ across three axes: shape (Oval on Junior, Large, X-Large, XX-Large; Round on the Round Charcoal), cooking area (210 sq in on the Junior up to 500 sq in on the XX-Large at the main grate; up to 800 sq in on the XX-Large with the Extension Rack), and configuration (Head Only for buyers who already have a cradle, table, or built-in surround; All-In-One for buyers who want the cradle, side tables, ash tool, and grate lifter included in one shipment).

Junior Oval — 210 sq in portable kamado

The Junior is Primo's smallest oval and the most portable in the lineup. 210 sq in of main cooking area on a 13½″ × 18½″ Reversible Cooking Grate, expandable to 360 sq in with the optional Extension Rack (more than twice the cooking area of the next largest portable ceramic grill). 100 lbs total weight — light enough to mount on the Primo GO cradle for tailgates, float trips, and patio use. Cooks 3 whole chickens, 4 racks of ribs, or 8 burgers in the main grate. Available as PGCJRH (Head Only) and PGCJRC (All-In-One). Best fit: smaller households, balconies and tight patios, second grills for couples who already own a larger kamado, and households that want a portable kamado for travel.

Round Charcoal — 280 sq in traditional kamado footprint

The Round is Primo's tribute to where kamado grills started — an 18½″-diameter round Reversible Cooking Grate over 280 sq in of cooking area, sized like a traditional round kamado. 200 lbs total weight. Available as PGCRH (Head Only) and PGCRC (All-In-One). The Round Charcoal model does not accept the Extension Rack or the Fire Box Divider (which require the oval body), but it uses the same Premium-Grade Ceramics, Easy Lift Hinge, 6-position aluminum damper top, 5-position lower air control slider, and Ceramic Retainer Clips as the oval models, with the same temperature range and the same warranty. Best fit: buyers replacing an existing round kamado, buyers who want the round-kamado aesthetic in their outdoor kitchen, and buyers who don't need the simultaneous two-zone cooking that the oval body provides.

Large Oval — 300 sq in family-sized oval

The Large Oval is Primo's family-sized model — 300 sq in of main cooking area on a 15″ × 22″ Reversible Cooking Grate, expandable to 495 sq in with the optional Extension Rack. 152 lbs total weight. Cooks 6 whole chickens, 8 racks of ribs, or 12 burgers in the main grate. Available as PGCLGH (Head Only) and PGCLGC (All-In-One). The Large is the smallest oval to accept the optional Fire Box Divider for true simultaneous two-zone cooking on the divided firebox. Best fit: households of 4–6 people, suburban patios, and outdoor kitchens that want the oval shape without the X-Large footprint.

X-Large Oval — 400 sq in flagship oval (and the Jack Daniel's Edition)

The X-Large is Primo's most popular oval. 400 sq in of main cooking area on an 18½″ × 25″ Reversible Cooking Grate, expandable to 680 sq in with the Extension Rack. 250 lbs total weight. Cooks 8 whole chickens, 10 racks of ribs, or 20 burgers in the main grate. Available as PGCXLH (Head Only), PGCXLC (All-In-One), and the PGCXLHJ X-Large Jack Daniel's Edition (cosmetic variant — identical specs, dimensions, and warranty as the standard PGCXLH, with the Jack Daniel's logo fired into the ceramic glaze). Accepts the Fire Box Divider, the full Heat Deflector Plate / Heat Deflector Rack system, the Extension Rack, the rotisserie kit, and Primo's largest baking stones. Best fit: entertainment-volume households, outdoor kitchens, and grillers who want the most versatile single-cooker setup in the Primo lineup.

XX-Large Oval — 500 sq in entertaining-volume oval

The XX-Large is Primo's flagship size, added to the lineup as the entertaining-volume oval. 500 sq in of main cooking area, expandable to 800 sq in with the Extension Rack. 282 lbs total weight. Cooks 10 whole chickens, 3 whole turkeys, or 28 burgers in the main grate; with the rack, the cooking surface is large enough to handle a suckling pig or 12 racks of ribs in a single load. Available as PGCXXLH (Head Only) and PGCXXLC (All-In-One). Best fit: large gatherings, BBQ competitions, commercial-volume residential use, and outdoor kitchens where the XX-Large is the only cooker the household needs.

🥃

X-Large Jack Daniel's Edition (PGCXLHJ) is a cosmetic variant of the X-Large

The Jack Daniel's Edition shares every functional specification with the standard X-Large Oval — same 400 sq in cooking area, same 680 sq in expanded with the rack, same 250 lbs total weight, same 28″ × 27½″ × 21½″ footprint, same Easy Lift Hinge, same Reversible Cooking Grates, same 151°–850°F+ temperature range, same warranty. The difference is the Jack Daniel's "Old No. 7" logo fired into the ceramic glaze on the front face of the dome and the option of a matching Jack Daniel's-branded grill table. Treat the Jack Daniel's Edition as an X-Large with a brand-collaboration finish — not a separate model line.

What "All-In-One" includes vs "Head Only"

The Head Only configuration ships the ceramic grill body alone — choose this if you already own a Primo cradle, plan to drop the head into a built-in island, or want to pair it with a Primo grill table or third-party stand. The All-In-One configuration adds the Cradle Stand with locking casters, two FDA-approved food-safe side tables, an ash tool, and a grate lifter — ready to grill out of the box in 30 minutes or less. The Oval models in the All-In-One configuration also include the Heat Deflector Plates and Firebox Divider, giving you the full simultaneous two-zone cooking setup at no extra charge.

Clearance requirements and cut-out planning

Primo recommends a minimum of 2″ of clearance around the exterior of every grill body and 10″–12″ of clearance behind the grill to open the lid properly (Junior and Round: 10″; Large, X-Large, X-Large JD, and XX-Large: 12″). Plan island cutouts and table openings to those dimensions. Primo publishes cut-out templates for every oval and round model in both the new-hinge and old-hinge configurations — the production lineup uses the new hinge. *XX-Large body dimensions are sourced from Primo manufacturer documentation, which lists the grill body as 42 3⁄16″ wide × 41½″ tall × 11″ at the upper-dome reference dimension; verify cutout against the XXL cut-out template before cutting an island.

🧭

How to Choose

Four questions: cooking volume, install scenario, configuration, and aesthetic

Four questions get you to the right Primo: how many people you regularly cook for, whether the grill stays put or needs to travel, whether you want the cradle and accessories included or you're sourcing your own surround, and whether the oval shape and simultaneous two-zone cooking matters to you.

1. How many people do you cook for?

  • 1–2 people, balcony or tight patio, or a portable grill for travel: Junior Oval — 210 sq in main, 360 sq in with the Extension Rack, 100 lbs, optionally mounted on the Primo GO portable cradle.
  • 2–4 people, replacing an existing round kamado, or buyers who prefer the round footprint: Round Charcoal — 280 sq in, 200 lbs, traditional round-kamado aesthetic.
  • 4–6 people, suburban patio, family-sized oval: Large Oval — 300 sq in main, 495 sq in with the rack, 152 lbs, accepts the Fire Box Divider for simultaneous two-zone cooking.
  • 6–10 people, regular entertaining, full Heat Deflector / Extension Rack system: X-Large Oval — 400 sq in main, 680 sq in with the rack, 250 lbs, Primo's most popular oval.
  • 10+ people, competition or commercial-volume residential use, suckling pig and whole-turkey cooks: XX-Large Oval — 500 sq in main, 800 sq in with the rack, 282 lbs.

2. Does the grill stay put or do you need to move it?

  • Stationary built-in island or permanent patio location: Choose the Head Only configuration. The ceramic body drops into a Primo grill table, a third-party kamado table, or a built-in island cutout. No cradle ships with the head — that's the point of the configuration.
  • Patio with the All-In-One cradle, ready to grill out of the box: Choose the All-In-One configuration. The Cradle Stand with locking casters, two FDA-approved food-safe side tables, ash tool, and grate lifter ship in the same package and assemble in 30 minutes or less. The Oval All-In-One packages also include the Heat Deflector Plates and Firebox Divider for simultaneous two-zone cooking.
  • Portable grill that moves between locations (tailgates, float trips, second homes): Choose the Junior Oval. The Junior is the only Primo size compatible with the Primo GO portable cradle, designed for transport.

3. Do you need simultaneous two-zone cooking, or is single-zone enough?

  • Yes — sear and indirect at the same time: Choose any of the four Oval models (Junior, Large, X-Large, XX-Large). The oval body and the optional Fire Box Divider create two distinct cooking zones along the long axis of the firebox — direct heat on one side, indirect on the other, at the same time.
  • No — single-zone direct or indirect is fine: The Round Charcoal uses the same Premium-Grade Ceramics, Easy Lift Hinge, 6-position aluminum damper top, and 5-position lower air control slider as the ovals, in the traditional round kamado footprint that some buyers prefer aesthetically.
  • Maximum cooking flexibility: The X-Large and XX-Large Ovals accept every accessory in the Primo catalog — Heat Deflector Plates and Racks, Fire Box Divider, Extension Rack, rotisserie, cast iron half-moon griddle, baking stones, and rib racks. The X-Large is the smallest size to accept the 15″ baking stone for pizza.

4. Standard finish or Jack Daniel's Edition?

  • Standard black porcelain glaze: All ten standard variants (Junior, Round, Large, X-Large, XX-Large — each in Head Only and All-In-One).
  • Jack Daniel's "Old No. 7" branding fired into the glaze: PGCXLHJ X-Large Oval Jack Daniel's Edition. Identical functional specs to the standard PGCXLH X-Large Head Only — 400 sq in, 250 lbs, 28″ × 27½″ × 21½″ footprint, same temperature range, same warranty. The difference is the Jack Daniel's branding and the option of a matching Jack Daniel's-branded grill table.

Common configurations

  • Couple, smaller patio, charcoal-first cooking: Junior Oval All-In-One (PGCJRC). Ready to grill out of the box, light enough to reposition.
  • Replacing a round kamado (Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe Classic II, etc.), keep the same footprint: Round Charcoal Head Only (PGCRH) — drop into the existing kamado table or cradle.
  • Family of four, suburban patio, want simultaneous two-zone cooking: Large Oval All-In-One (PGCLGC). Cradle, side tables, Heat Deflector Plates, and Fire Box Divider all included.
  • Entertaining household, full Heat Deflector / Extension Rack setup, room for pizza on the 15″ stone: X-Large Oval All-In-One (PGCXLC).
  • Buyer who wants the Primo X-Large with Jack Daniel's branding: PGCXLHJ X-Large Jack Daniel's Edition. Pair with the optional Jack Daniel's grill table.
  • Competition / commercial-volume / 10+ people on a single cook: XX-Large Oval All-In-One (PGCXXLC).
  • Built-in outdoor kitchen island, dropping the ceramic head into a counter cutout: Choose the Head Only configuration in your size — PGCJRH, PGCRH, PGCLGH, PGCXLH, or PGCXXLH. Verify the cutout against Primo's published cut-out template for the size before cutting the island.

FAQ

Top questions about Primo Ceramic Grills

Are Primo Kamado grills good?

Primo is the kamado category's only oval-bodied ceramic grill, built around a Patented Oval Design that creates true two-zone direct and indirect cooking simultaneously — sear over the hot side while roasting vegetables, baking pizza, or holding a low-and-slow brisket on the cool side. Every Primo body is Premium-Grade Ceramics with a black porcelain glaze and is backed by a Limited Lifetime warranty (with a 20-year guarantee) on the ceramic parts. Since the Empire Comfort Systems acquisition in 2019, the lineup added an Easy Lift Hinge (reduces lid-lift force by 70%), a 6-position aluminum damper top with all-weather hood, a 5-position lower air control slider, and Ceramic Retainer Clips integrated into the handle. Temperature range is 151°–850°F+ across every model. The result is a kamado that grills, bakes, roasts, and smokes from one cooker with more than 69 documented cooking configurations.

Who owns Primo Ceramic Grills?

Primo Ceramic Grills was founded in 1996 by George Samaras and acquired by Empire Comfort Systems in the fall of 2019. Empire Comfort Systems is a 4th-generation family-owned business established in 1932 and headquartered in Belleville, Illinois, and also manufactures gas and wood heating appliances and gas grills. Since the acquisition, Empire has reinvested in product improvements — the Easy Lift Hinge, 6-position aluminum damper top, 5-position lower air control slider, and Ceramic Retainer Clips were all added to the Primo lineup post-2019.

Primo vs Big Green Egg vs Kamado Joe — what's actually different?

All three are premium ceramic kamado grills, and all three deliver the same cooking modes — high-heat grilling, low-and-slow smoking, baking, and roasting from one cooker. The differences come down to body shape, lineup scope, and how two-zone cooking is set up.

Body shape. Big Green Egg and Kamado Joe both use the traditional round ceramic body that defined the modern kamado category — heat radiates evenly from a central firebox, and two-zone cooking is achieved by banking charcoal to one side of a single round grate. Primo's Patented Oval Design (introduced in 2002) elongates the firebox along one axis, which lets you split it with the optional Fire Box Divider and run a direct sear zone on one side of the grate while smoking, roasting, or holding food on the indirect side at the same time — a structural two-zone separation rather than a managed-airflow workaround.

Lineup scope. Big Green Egg ships seven sizes from MiniMax up to 2XL with a long-established third-party accessory ecosystem. Primo's catalog is narrower — five families (Junior Oval, Round Charcoal, Large Oval, X-Large Oval, XX-Large Oval) — but every Primo accepts the Reversible Cooking Grates, Heat Deflector Plates and Racks, Extension Rack system (adds 30–65% more cooking area), and (on the ovals) the Fire Box Divider. Both brands deliver a similar Limited Lifetime ceramic warranty.

Practical decision. Pick the round-kamado category leader if accessory and community scale matters most. Pick Primo if simultaneous oval two-zone cooking is the deciding factor — and note that Primo's own Round Charcoal model is the option for buyers who want Primo's Premium-Grade Ceramics and post-2019 upgrades in the traditional round footprint.

What are the cons of kamado grills?

Three trade-offs apply to every ceramic kamado, Primo included. First, ceramic bodies are heavy — a Primo Junior is 100 lbs, a Round is 200 lbs, a Large is 152 lbs, an XL is 250 lbs, and an XXL is 282 lbs — so plan the install location with the long-term placement in mind rather than expecting to move it after assembly. Second, kamado grills take longer to come up to temperature than a metal gas grill because the ceramic body is absorbing heat as it heats. The flip side is that once a Primo is at temperature it holds it efficiently with very little fuel. Third, lump charcoal quality matters more on a kamado than on an open gas grill — Primo recommends 100% natural lump charcoal (not briquettes) for the cleanest burn and longest fuel life. None of these are deal-breakers for a household that wants real wood-fired flavor; they're the operating model of the format.

What is the difference between Head Only and All-In-One configurations?

The Head Only configuration ships the ceramic grill body alone — choose this if you already own a Primo cradle, plan to drop the head into a built-in island, or want to pair it with a Primo grill table or third-party stand. The All-In-One configuration adds the Cradle Stand with locking casters, two FDA-approved food-safe side tables, an ash tool, and a grate lifter — ready to grill out of the box in 30 minutes or less. The Oval All-In-One packages (Junior, Large, X-Large, XX-Large) also include the Heat Deflector Plates and Firebox Divider, giving you the full simultaneous two-zone cooking setup at no extra charge. Pricing reflects the difference: at every size, the All-In-One is the better value if you don't already own a Primo cradle and the accessories.

Does Primo offer free shipping?

Serene Yards offers free shipping nationwide on every Primo variant — the Junior, Round, Large, X-Large, XX-Large, and the X-Large Jack Daniel's Edition, in both Head Only and All-In-One configurations. How do I choose between the Primo Junior, Large, X-Large, and XX-Large Oval?

The four Primo Ovals share the same Patented Oval Design, the same Premium-Grade Ceramics, the same Reversible Cooking Grates, the same 6-position aluminum damper top, the same 5-position lower air control slider, the same Easy Lift Hinge, and the same Limited Lifetime ceramic warranty. They differ in cooking area, weight, and which accessories the body accepts:

  • Junior Oval (PGCJRH / PGCJRC) — 210 sq in main / 360 sq in with the Extension Rack. 100 lbs. Cooks 3 whole chickens, 4 racks of ribs, or 8 burgers in the main grate. The only Primo size compatible with the Primo GO portable cradle. Best fit: 1–2 people, balconies, tight patios, second grills for couples who already own a larger kamado, or households that want a portable kamado for travel.
  • Large Oval (PGCLGH / PGCLGC) — 300 sq in / 495 sq in with the rack. 152 lbs. Cooks 6 whole chickens, 8 racks of ribs, or 12 burgers in the main grate. The smallest oval to accept the optional Fire Box Divider for simultaneous two-zone cooking. Best fit: families of 4–6, suburban patios, outdoor kitchens that want the oval shape without the X-Large footprint.
  • X-Large Oval (PGCXLH / PGCXLC / PGCXLHJ) — 400 sq in / 680 sq in with the rack. 250 lbs. Cooks 8 whole chickens, 10 racks of ribs, or 20 burgers in the main grate. The smallest oval to accept the 15″ baking stone for pizza. Accepts every accessory in the Primo catalog. Primo's most popular oval. Best fit: entertainment-volume households (6–10 people), outdoor kitchens, and grillers who want the most versatile single-cooker setup.
  • XX-Large Oval (PGCXXLH / PGCXXLC) — 500 sq in / 800 sq in with the rack. 282 lbs. Cooks 10 whole chickens, 3 whole turkeys, or 28 burgers in the main grate; with the rack, large enough for a suckling pig or 12 racks of ribs in a single load. Best fit: 10+ people, BBQ competitions, commercial-volume residential use, and outdoor kitchens where the XX-Large is the only cooker the household needs.

If you want the traditional round-kamado footprint instead of the oval, see the Round Charcoal model — 280 sq in, 200 lbs, with the same Premium-Grade Ceramics and post-2019 upgrades as the ovals, in the round shape.

What cutout dimensions do I need to drop a Primo into a built-in island?

Primo publishes a per-size cut-out template PDF for every model — Junior Oval, Round Charcoal, Large Oval, X-Large Oval, and XX-Large Oval. Each template shows the plan-view cutout dimensions and the elevation height from the top surface to the supporting shelf, with optional hinge-notch detail to lower the lip of the grill flush to the countertop. The production lineup uses the new-hinge configuration — pull Primo's cut-out template for your size before cutting an island. Don't size the cutout from the body footprint alone; the body widens at the dome above the cooking grate, and the template accounts for that geometry.

Plan the cutout to Primo's recommended clearances: 2″ around the exterior of the grill body, 10″ behind the Junior or Round, and 12″ behind the Large, X-Large, X-Large Jack Daniel's Edition, and XX-Large — that's the clearance needed to open the lid properly past the dome rotation. Body footprints by size are in the Per-Model Specs section of this guide.

For the order itself, choose the Head Only configuration in your size — PGCJRH, PGCRH, PGCLGH, PGCXLH, or PGCXXLH. The Head Only ships the ceramic grill body alone, sized to drop into the cutout. The All-In-One configuration ships with a Cradle Stand that isn't needed for a built-in install.

Primo's lineup maps cleanly to household and entertaining volume. Counts below are based on what fits on the main cooking grate; the Extension Rack adds 30–65% more cooking area on every oval if you need a second tier.

  • 1–2 people (couple, balcony or small patio, or a portable second grill) — Junior Oval (210 sq in main / 360 with the rack). Cooks 3 whole chickens, 4 racks of ribs, or 8 burgers per load.
  • 2–4 peopleRound Charcoal (280 sq in, 200 lbs) is the traditional round-kamado footprint; Junior Oval also works if portability matters.
  • 4–6 peopleLarge Oval (300 sq in main / 495 with the rack). Cooks 6 whole chickens, 8 racks of ribs, or 12 burgers per load. The smallest oval to accept the Fire Box Divider for simultaneous two-zone cooking.
  • 6–10 people (regular entertaining) — X-Large Oval (400 sq in main / 680 with the rack). Cooks 8 whole chickens, 10 racks of ribs, or 20 burgers per load. The smallest size that fits the 15″ baking stone for pizza.
  • 10+ people (large gatherings, BBQ competitions, commercial-volume residential use) — XX-Large Oval (500 sq in main / 800 with the rack). Cooks 10 whole chickens, 3 whole turkeys, or 28 burgers per load. With the rack, large enough for a suckling pig or 12 racks of ribs in one load.

If you cook the same kind of food repeatedly, size to the largest single load you regularly expect to do — the kamado holds temperature efficiently and the marginal fuel cost of running a larger cooker on a lighter load is small.
