Guides & Downloads

The BF Series is the only Dimplex traditional firebox available with 240V hardwiring at 9,200 BTU plus a 208V commercial wiring option.

Best for spaces that need real heat output from a traditional-format electric fireplace — 9,200 BTU at 240V is roughly twice what the 120V Revillusion produces. The 208V commercial wiring option suits retail, hospitality, and institutional installations where 240V residential service is not available.

Original Dimplex Flame Effect™ uses incandescent bulbs reflected off mirrored rear glass with cast urethane inner-glow logs — a different mechanism from the LED systems elsewhere in the Dimplex lineup. Available in 33", 39", and 45" sizes at 15-to-16-inch installation depths on a dedicated circuit: 120V at 1,440W, 240V at 2,700W (9,200 BTU), or 208V commercial at 2,100W. Hardwired direct-wire is standard; an optional plug kit enables 120V plug-in.

A built-in firebox with the heat output to back the look.

Why Choose the Dimplex BF Series Built-In Electric Fireboxes?

The Dimplex BF Series installs where other fireplaces cannot — in standard 2x4 partition walls, multifamily construction, commercial spaces, and any room where gas or wood is not an option.

Zero-clearance framing — The BF Series requires no clearance to combustible framing on sides, rear, or bottom, fitting directly into standard framing without additional fireproofing or standoffs.

Three sizes for existing openings — At 33", 39", and 45" wide, the BF Series fits rough openings that most built-in projects already have, with framing depths from 15 to 16 inches.

Dual-voltage flexibility — Wire at 120V for 1,440W of supplemental heat, or at 240V for up to 2,700W and 9,200 BTU, making it a practical primary heating source in smaller rooms.

Cool-touch glass — The glass surface remains cool during operation, documented in Dimplex installation materials, making the unit safe for any location.

Backed by a 2-year limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship; light bulbs are excluded and are the owner's responsibility.

Dimplex BF Series Built-In Electric Fireboxes Installation Overview

The BF Series installs as a recessed built-in into a framed rough opening; the BF33 requires a 15-inch minimum framing depth, while the BF39 and BF45 require 16 inches. Four side-mounted flanges anchor the unit to the framing interior, and the unit wires directly to a dedicated electrical circuit at 120V or 240V — always by a certified electrician. For complete framing dimensions across all three sizes, see the Dimplex BF Series Size Guide →

FAQ – All Your Questions Answered

Does the Dimplex BF Series require venting or a gas line?

No. The BF Series is a 100% electric firebox that requires no venting, chimney, or gas line. It wires directly to a dedicated electrical circuit at 120V or 240V — an optional plug kit (BFPLUGE, sold separately) is available for 120V plug-in installation via a 7 ft. cord. Because there are no combustion byproducts, the BF Series can be installed in locations where building code prohibits gas or wood fireplaces, including multifamily buildings and commercial spaces.

What does it cost to run the Dimplex BF Series?

Running cost depends on your local electricity rate, shown on your utility bill as cents per kWh.

To calculate your hourly cost:
Wattage ÷ 1,000 = kW
kW × your rate per kWh = your cost per hour

BF Series power draw (confirmed from Dimplex installation documentation — identical across all three models):
Full heat at 120V: 1,440W = 1.44 kW per hour
Full heat at 240V: 2,700W = 2.70 kW per hour
Flame-only mode (no heat): 245W = 0.245 kW per hour

Example at the approximate U.S. average of 16–17 cents per kWh — verify with your utility bill:
120V heat: 1.44 × $0.16 = approximately $0.23 per hour
240V heat: 2.70 × $0.16 = approximately $0.43 per hour
Flame only: 0.245 × $0.16 = approximately $0.04 per hour

Rates range from under 10 cents in some states to over 30 cents in others. Multiply the kW value by your actual rate for an accurate estimate.

Can the flame effect be used without heat?

Yes. The BF Series mode selector has a dedicated flame-only position ("o" on the mode selector switch), which runs the flame image without activating the heater. In flame-only mode the unit draws 245W, covering the light bulbs and motors per Dimplex's installation documentation. This lets you enjoy the visual effect year-round regardless of season or room temperature.

What warranty does the Dimplex BF Series come with?

The BF Series is covered by a 2-year limited warranty from the date of first purchase, applying to defects in materials and workmanship. The warranty covers the original purchaser only and is not transferable. Light bulbs are explicitly excluded and are the owner's responsibility. Proof of purchase is required for warranty service. The warranty applies to purchases made in the contiguous United States and most Canadian provinces; purchases in Hawaii, Alaska, and certain Canadian territories are excluded.

Can the Dimplex BF Series be installed beneath a television?

A minimum clearance distance above the glass opening for television mounting is not specified in the Dimplex BF Series installation documentation. The glass surface is documented as cool-touch during operation. Consult a qualified installer and your TV manufacturer's guidelines before mounting any display above this or any electric firebox.

What dedicated circuit does the Dimplex BF Series require?

The BF Series wires to a dedicated electrical circuit at either 120V or 240V. The on-unit voltage selector switch must be set to match the supply voltage before use. At 120V the unit draws 1,440W / 12.0A; at 240V it draws 2,700W / 11.3A. A 208V commercial supply is also supported at 2,100W / 10.1A. Breaker size is not specified in Dimplex documentation — confirm with a certified electrician based on the amperage values above and your local electrical code. A dedicated circuit is required.

What size room will the Dimplex BF Series heat?

According to Dimplex's official product page, the BF Series fan-forced heater is suited for spaces up to approximately 1,000 sq. ft. This is Dimplex's general estimate; actual performance depends on insulation, ceiling height, climate zone, and construction type. For maximum output, wire the unit at 240V for 2,700W and approximately 9,200 BTU. At 120V, the output is 1,440W with BTU output ranging from approximately 4,913 to 5,000 depending on model. The heating area figure is not published in the Dimplex installation manual.

What models are in the BF Series and are they hardwired or plug-in?

The BF Series includes three models: the BF33STP/DXP (33"), BF39STP/DXP (39"), and BF45DXP (45"). All three are designed as direct-wire appliances that hardwire to a dedicated electrical circuit — no plug or outlet is required for standard installation. An optional plug kit (BFPLUGE) is available for 120V plug-in installations. All three sizes share the same wattage and differ primarily in framing dimensions and viewing area size.

The Opti-Myst® Linear is the only Dimplex linear that produces a flame effect from atomized water vapor and LED-illuminated mist — not an LED screen. Best for buyers who want a flame with physical depth — mist that moves with each draft and reflects light differently every second, rather than a programmed loop on a screen. Direct cold-water connection allows... The Nova Multi-Fire XHD is the only Dimplex firebox that ships plug-in ready — no hardwiring, no dedicated circuit run, no framing required for retrofit installs. Best for retrofitting an existing zero-clearance wood-burning fireplace to electric without rewiring or pulling a new circuit, or for buyers who want a plug-and-play firebox that connects to a standard household outlet.
