The Buck Stove Homesteader is a wood-fired cook stove that delivers cooking, baking, and room heat from a single appliance. The firebox sits at the bottom with the oven directly above; a middle damper on the side of the stove redirects flue gases around the oven for baking and roasting. The cooktop has two direct-heat plates for pots and pans, and both the firebox and oven have glass viewing windows. The Homesteader heats up to 1,800 square feet and operates 100 percent off-grid with no electrical input required for any function. Vents through a 6 inch black or blued steel chimney connector into a UL 103 HT factory-built chimney or code-approved masonry chimney with flue liner. Tested to ANSI/UL1482-REV 7 and CAN/ULC-S627. Outer dimensions 29.13 inches wide by 24.89 inches deep by 42.13 inches tall. Best for homesteading, off-grid cabins, hunting camps, tiny houses, and power-outage backup cooking and heating.

Why Choose the Buck Stove Homesteader Wood Cook Stove?

Functional cooktop and oven for true wood cooking. The Homesteader is the only Buck Stove product engineered for cooking. The cooktop accepts two pots or pans for direct-heat cooking; the built-in oven bakes bread, roasts meat, and slow-cooks stews. A side-mounted middle damper redirects flue gases around the oven for cooking mode or routes them straight up for heating mode.

Heats up to 1,800 square feet alongside the cooking function. With the middle damper open in heating mode, the Homesteader operates as a primary heater for small homes and cabins. Cooking mode reduces room heat output slightly as flue gases route around the oven, but the Homesteader still delivers meaningful warmth during meal preparation.

100 percent off-grid operation. No electricity is required for any function. No blower, no thermostat circuit, no electronic ignition. The Homesteader runs on natural draft and manual damper control, making it appropriate for off-grid cabins, homesteads, hunting camps, and power-outage backup cooking and heating in grid-tied homes.

Tested to ANSI/UL1482-REV 7 and CAN/ULC-S627. Listed by PFS/TECO of Cottage Grove, Wisconsin. Two glass viewing doors on the firebox and oven let you monitor the fire and the food. Built by New Buck Corporation in Spruce Pine, North Carolina.

Buck Stove Homesteader Wood Cook Stove Installation Overview

The Buck Stove Homesteader vents through a 6 inch black or blued steel chimney connector into a UL 103 HT factory-built chimney or code-approved masonry chimney with a flue liner. Side to wall clearance is 16 inches; rear to wall is 14 inches; corner to wall (45 degrees) is 10 inches; collar to wall is 16-7/8 inches. The non-combustible floor protector requires a minimum R-value of 3 and extends 8 inches on each side and 16 inches in front (USA) or 18 inches in front (Canada). Minimum chimney height follows the 2-10-3 rule. The Homesteader is freestanding only and cannot be installed in a mobile or manufactured home per the owner's manual. Full clearance values and installation requirements are documented in the Homesteader Cook Stove Size Guide.

FAQ – All Your Questions Answered

What size space does the Buck Stove Homesteader heat?

The Homesteader heats up to 1,800 square feet under typical conditions. It is a wood cook stove with a functional cooktop and built-in oven that delivers both wood cooking capability and room heat from a single appliance. Actual heated area depends on home insulation, ceiling height, layout, and climate zone.

Can you cook on the Homesteader?

Yes. The Homesteader has a functional cooktop with two direct-heat plates for pots and pans, plus a built-in oven with a glass viewing window. A middle damper on the side of the stove redirects flue gases around the oven for cooking and baking, or routes them straight up to the chimney for room heating.

Does the Homesteader need electricity?

No. The Buck Stove Homesteader is 100 percent off-grid. No electrical input is required for any function. There is no blower, no electronic ignition, no thermostat circuit, and no electrical components. The Homesteader operates entirely on natural draft and manual damper control.

Can the Homesteader be installed in a mobile home?

No. The Homesteader owner's manual explicitly states: do not install this unit in a mobile or manufactured home. For mobile home installation, choose the Buck Stove Model 21 non-catalytic, the only Buck Stove wood stove approved for mobile home installation.

What clearances does the Homesteader require?

Per the manual: side to wall 16 inches, side to hearth 17-3/4 inches, rear to wall 14 inches, collar to wall 16-7/8 inches, corner to wall at 45 degrees 10 inches, back to wall at 45 degree corner 28-3/4 inches. Floor protector must have minimum R-value of 3, extending 8 inches on each side and 16 inches in front (USA) or 18 inches in front (Canada).

What chimney does the Homesteader need?

The Homesteader requires a 6 inch black or blued steel chimney connector (minimum 24-gauge) connected to either a 6 inch factory-built UL 103 HT chimney (ULC S629 in Canada) or a code-approved masonry chimney with a flue liner. Minimum chimney height follows the 2-10-3 rule. Aluminum and galvanized steel pipe are not acceptable.

What fuel does the Homesteader burn?

Solid wood fuel only. Dry seasoned cordwood is the preferred fuel. Do not burn garbage, treated wood, painted wood, plywood, plastic, coal, or any chemical accelerants. Wood should be seasoned 6 to 12 months under cover with airflow until moisture content drops below 20 percent. Build the fire directly on the firebricks; do not use a grate.

What is the warranty on the Homesteader?

Buck Stove Limited Warranty. Period I (year one) covers any part defective in materials or workmanship at no charge for parts; customer pays labor and transportation. Period II (years two through five) covers parts excluding electrical motors, wiring, switches, components, accessories, and removable parts. Glass, refractory material, firebrick, and gaskets are never covered. Original retail purchaser only; non-transferable.

What is your price match guarantee?

We are confident in our pricing and offer a price match guarantee. If you find a current lower advertised price from an authorized U.S. retailer on the same in-stock item, contact us before your purchase. While we adhere to manufacturer pricing policies, we are committed to working with you to ensure you receive the best possible value.
