Orion® No Flames Solution Guide

The Orion Slim is the slimmest HelioVision™ Modern Flames model — a 6-inch recessed depth that fits standard 2x6 framing.

Best for projects that call for HelioVision™ flame realism but cannot accommodate the 9-inch depth of the Orion Multi or the 10-inch depth of the Orion Traditional. A standard 2x6 stud cavity will fit it without modification, making it the right pick for tighter wall builds where flame quality is the priority.

HelioVision™ layers a virtual flame over a physical driftwood log and glass media bed, with three flame styles in six colors and independent control of flame, ember, and downlighting. Available in 52", 60", 76", and 100" sizes, the unit recesses to a 6-inch depth on a dedicated 120V, 20-amp circuit and produces 5,000 BTU. Phone, remote, and voice control through Alexa or Google Home are standard, plus an adjustable crackling speaker.

Modern Flames Orion Slim HelioVision Linear Electric Fireplace Installation Overview

The Orion Slim supports three installation configurations: wall recessed
(slide-in), wall surface mounted, and mantel installed, with all four sizes
requiring a minimum finished wall depth of 6" for recessed installation.

A dedicated 120V, 20-amp grounded circuit is required for all models; the unit
can be plug-in or hardwired, and hardwiring must be performed by a qualified
electrician.

FAQ – All Your Questions Answered

Does the Modern Flames Orion Slim produce heat?

Yes. The Orion Slim includes a 5,000 BTU heater drawing 1,465W at full operation.
It also supports flame-only mode, which runs the HelioVision™ display without
activating the heater. This makes it suitable for year-round use: heat when you
need it, ambiance when you do not.

All four sizes share the same heat output: 5,000 BTU at 120V. A dedicated 20-amp
circuit is required regardless of whether the heater is in use.

What is HelioVision flame technology?

HelioVision™ Flame Technology is Modern Flames' virtual flame system across the
Orion series. It projects a high-resolution virtual flame image onto a physical
media bed — a western driftwood log set and reflective black crushed glass
included with every unit — so the flame appears to exist within a real fuel bed
rather than behind a flat panel.

Three flame styles are available: Hybrid, Wood, and Gas appearance (visual
styles only — this is a 100% electric unit). Each style comes in six colors:
Yellow, Orange, Blue, Green, Purple, and White, giving 18 total presets. The
ember bed and downlighting each have independent RGB color control.

Are Modern Flames Orion Slim fireplaces noisy?

When the heater is active, a blower fan operates at low volume. In flame-only
mode with the heater off, the unit runs nearly silently. The only additional
sound is the optional ambient crackling audio played through the built-in
speaker, which has four volume levels (Off, Low, Medium, High) and can be
muted entirely.

What is the warranty on the Modern Flames Orion Slim?

The Orion Slim is covered by a 5-year limited warranty when registered at
modernflames.com after purchase. Without registration, a 2-year warranty
applies. The integrated screen carries a separate 1-year coverage term, and
Modern Flames provides a 1-year labor credit of up to $100 for one service call.

Warranty exclusions include damage from improper installation, power surges,
unauthorized modifications, and failure to maintain the product per manufacturer
instructions. Have your serial number and proof of purchase ready for any claim.

Does the Modern Flames Orion Slim require venting or a gas line?

No. The Orion Slim is 100% electric and requires no venting, no gas line, and no chimney of any kind. The only installation requirement beyond mounting is a dedicated 120V, 20-amp grounded circuit. This applies to all four sizes: OR52-SLIM, OR60-SLIM, OR76-SLIM, and OR100-SLIM.

What does it cost to run the Modern Flames Orion Slim?

Running cost depends on your local electricity rate, shown on your utility bill
as cents per kWh.

To calculate your hourly cost:
1,465W ÷ 1,000 = 1.465 kW
1.465 kW × your rate per kWh = your cost per hour

Orion Slim power draw:
Full heat at 120V: 1,465W = 1.465 kW per hour
Flame-only mode: draws less — exact wattage not specified by manufacturer

Example at the approximate U.S. average of 16–17 cents per kWh — verify with
your utility bill:
Full heat: 1.465 × $0.16 = approximately $0.23 per hour

Rates range from under 10 cents in some states to over 30 cents in others.

Can the Modern Flames Orion Slim be installed beneath a television?

Yes. The installation manual documents a minimum clearance of 11.8" (300mm) from the top of the unit to any TV, mantel, or ceiling above it, measured from the glass front. This applies to all four sizes and is the only documented restriction for above-unit placement.

What dedicated circuit does the Modern Flames Orion Slim require?

All four Orion Slim models require a dedicated 120V, 20-amp grounded circuit with a dedicated 20-amp or higher breaker. No other appliances may share the circuit. Extension cords and power strips are prohibited — the unit must plug directly into a wall outlet. If hardwiring is preferred, a qualified electrician
must perform the work. These requirements apply to all four sizes: OR52-SLIM, OR60-SLIM, OR76-SLIM, and OR100-SLIM.
