Wood-look planters that do not weather like wood

Timber planters carry a maintenance schedule. Wood takes oil or stain to hold its colour, and joints open as the boards move. The Woodland Collection is fiberglass moulded with a real wood plank and grain texture, which is how Jay Scotts give the appearance of wood without the concerns that usually come with leaving timber outdoors.

Two troughs, one footprint, two heights

Sedona and Siena share a plan exactly: 17 inches deep, in 36, 48, 60 and 72 inch lengths. The difference is height. Sedona stands 32 inches — Jay Scotts designed it for spaces that need height, separation or privacy, along walkways, patios and pool decks. Siena stands 24 inches and reads as a planted border rather than a divider. Run them together and the footprints line up.

At 17 inches deep both are narrow enough for a walkway or a balcony edge, and both carry a 34.1 by 15.1 inch interior at the 36 inch length, rising to 70.1 by 15.1 at 72 inches.

A cube in four sizes, and one round

Asheville is the cube, at 17, 20, 24 and 28 inches, with straight walls that hold the same section from rim to floor — the square plan makes it easy to place beside an entrance or arrange around a seating area. Aspen is the only round in the group and the only one sold in a single size, a 20 inch diameter by 23 inch tall body at 19.8 lb with an 18.1 inch opening. Its gently tapered profile suits specimen plantings, ornamental grasses and smaller trees.

What to know before ordering

Every planter in the collection arrives finished in walnut. There is no colour to choose and no custom paint lead time, unlike the twenty-colour Jay Scotts painted range. Jay Scotts describe the collection as combining the look of natural wood with the strength and weather resistance of fiberglass, and they seal the outer surface of every planter with a UV-resistant coating as it is made, before any colour is applied.

Drainage is an option rather than a default. Choose it on the product page and Jay Scotts drill the holes free of charge before the planter ships, sized to the grow pots each planter is built around — from a 14 inch pot in the smallest cube up to five 13 inch pots across a 72 inch trough. Leave it off and the planter arrives sealed. Drilling cannot be undone, so a drilled planter is final sale, and holes you drill yourself may void the warranty.

Both troughs ship freight at every length, as does the 28 inch cube; the other three cubes and Aspen go Ground. Every size lists its exterior dimensions, interior opening, packaged weight and shipping method on the product page. Each planter holds a three year Jay Scotts warranty from the time the product is accepted.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is this real wood?

No. These are premium composite fiberglass with a textured walnut finish moulded into the body. They give the grain and colour of weathered walnut with no timber to rot, split, warp or seal, and they are far lighter than wood.

Do the Woodland planters come in other colours?

No. All four are made in a single walnut finish, so there is no colour option to select. The twenty-colour painted palette applies to the rest of the Jay Scotts range, not to these.

Which sizes ship by freight?

Sedona and Siena ship freight at every length, and so does the 28 inch Asheville cube at 64 lb. The 17, 20 and 24 inch cubes and the Aspen ship Ground. The method for each size is shown on the product page before you order.

Do they come with drainage holes?

Not by default — drainage is a free option you choose on the product page. Left off, the planter arrives sealed.

Choose it if the planter is going outdoors. Rain and irrigation collect in a sealed planter with nowhere to go, and in cold climates that water can freeze and expand, which may damage the planter. Standing water is also hard on most plants.

Leave it off if the planter is going indoors. Sealed, it works as a cachepot or holds a nursery liner, which is usually what you want on a floor you would rather keep dry.

If you choose it, Jay Scotts drill before shipping to their own specification — 1 to 2 inch holes every 12 inches of planter length, so a 60 inch planter gets 4 to 5 holes. Two things to know: drilling cannot be undone, so a drilled planter is final sale; and if you drill your own later, use the same spacing, because holes outside those guidelines are not covered by the warranty.

What warranty do they carry?

Each planter holds a three year manufacturer warranty against defects in material and workmanship, running from the time the product is accepted. Serene Yards is an authorized Jay Scotts dealer, so the full manufacturer warranty applies to every planter we sell.
