Outdoor planters usually need drainage. Indoors, most people leave them sealed.

Which should I choose?

Why it matters
Rain and irrigation collect in a sealed planter with nowhere to go. In cold climates that water can freeze and expand, which may damage the planter. Standing water is also hard on most plants.

Do I need it?

Outdoors: almost always, especially anywhere that freezes.
Indoors: usually not. A sealed planter works as a cachepot or holds a nursery liner, which is what most people want on a floor they would rather keep dry.

What we do
Drilling is free and done before your planter ships, to the manufacturer's specification:

1 to 2 inch holes every 12 inches of planter length.
For example, a 60 inch planter gets 4 to 5 holes.
If you prefer to drill your own later, use the same spacing. Holes outside these guidelines are not covered by the warranty.

Made to order
Each planter is hand-finished when you order it. Allow 3 to 5 business days of production before your order ships. Gloss finishes need 5 to 7.

Curbside freight delivery
This size ships on a pallet by freight truck for a flat $395, free on orders over $2,000. The driver lowers it to the curb with a liftgate; plan for a second person to move it into place. The carrier will call to schedule a delivery window, so please be available. Freight transit is usually 3 to 5 business days once the pallet leaves, and up to 7 to the Mountain states and the West Coast. You will get tracking when the pallet leaves, and we will confirm the delivery window with you once the carrier books it.

Returns
This size is final sale except for a manufacturer defect or shipping damage.

If it arrives damaged
Inspect the shipment before you sign. Note any damage on the bill of lading or delivery receipt before signing — to the boxes, the planter, or the packing material. A delivery that arrives visibly damaged or not intact may also be refused outright. You are entitled to open each box and inspect the goods; if the driver will not wait, write on the paperwork that you could not check for concealed damage. Report it to us in writing within 24 hours of delivery at customerservice@sereneyards.com, with photos of the damage, the cartons and the packing material, and keep all packaging until the claim is resolved. Damage noted at delivery and reported this way is covered — contact us and we'll make it right, either by replacing the planter or refunding you. Damage not noted at the time of delivery is much harder to resolve, because the carrier claim depends on that record. Full details are in our Shipping Policy.

Return & Refund Policy

Return Eligibility
Jay Scotts planters may be returned within 14 days of delivery, unused, uninstalled, and in the original box with all factory packing materials. Planters with drainage holes added and custom orders are final sale. This does not affect your rights if the planter arrives damaged or defective.

Contact us first. Email customerservice@sereneyards.com or call 888.254.6088 for a Return Authorization (RA) number. Returns without an RA cannot be accepted.

Return Costs

A 30% restocking fee applies to all authorized returns.
Original shipping charges are non-refundable. Where shipping was free or discounted, the original shipping cost may be assessed.
You arrange and prepay return shipping.
For returns due to our error (damaged, defective, or incorrect item), we cover return shipping and waive the restocking fee.

Every Jay Scotts planter carries a three-year limited manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, which applies whether or not an item is returnable.

The Sedona is the Siena at screening height. Same seventeen-inch section, same molded walnut plank texture, eight more inches of body.

Those eight inches change the job rather than the object. At twenty-four inches a trough edges a space; at thirty-two the rim is at counter height before a single plant goes in, so a run of them shelters a table, closes the open side of a terrace, or gives a rooftop seating area a back. Add planting and it is well above the eye line of anyone sitting down.

The finish is the reason to pick it over a painted box, and it is also the constraint: this model is made in textured walnut and nothing else, so there is no color to choose. What you get instead is a timber look that does not behave like timber, on a shell that does not swell, split or need sealing against permanently damp soil. Four lengths to six feet. The longest is ninety-nine pounds boxed, which makes placement a decision. The plank texture is molded into the fiberglass rather than applied to it, and the wall is non-porous, so it does not take up the water that expands on freezing. Freight at every length.

Can the Sedona be used indoors and outdoors?

Yes. Non-porous, so it does not absorb the water that expands on freezing.

Drainage is what decides it in practice: water left standing in an undrained planter through a freeze is the common failure, not the material.

What sizes does it come in?

Four lengths — 36, 48, 60 and 72 inches — all 17 inches deep and 32 inches tall.

Is this real wood?

No. The Sedona is premium composite fiberglass with a textured walnut finish molded into the body. It gives the grain and color of weathered walnut with no timber to rot, split, warp or seal, and it is far lighter than wood.

How is it different from the Siena?

Same footprint and finish, different height: the Sedona stands 32 inches tall, the Siena 24. Choose the Sedona to screen, the Siena to edge.

Does it come with drainage holes?

Not by default, so it can hold a liner. You can add drilled drainage free when you choose your size, though a drilled planter is final sale.

How heavy is it, and how does it ship?

From 56.2 lb for the 36 inch up to 99.2 lb for the 72 inch. It ships by curbside freight at a $395 flat rate, free over $2,000.

Do I have to fill a tall planter with soil all the way down?

No, and on a deep planter you should not. Some models carry an integrated internal ledge about 10 to 12 inches below the rim that holds a nursery pot, so the planting sits at the top and the depth below stays empty. A ledge weighs about 3 to 5 pounds and carries 75 to 100 pounds, and it is made for selected models at extra cost. Without one, lighten the base with empty plastic bottles or jugs. Avoid anything that breaks down, which encourages mold and bacteria.

What soil should I use?

Potting soil, potting mix or container mix only. Topsoil is heavy and gets heavier when wet, which puts outward pressure on the planter walls and compacts where a container mix stays open. Set the root ball one to three inches below the rim, water to settle it, and finish with a top dressing such as river rock or moss.
