The Seoul's long faces bow outward through the middle and return at each end, and the rim follows the same curve. From any angle except straight on, it reads as a line rather than as a box.

That is the argument for it over a rectangular trough. In a courtyard with a curved path, around a rounded seating group, or against a wall that is doing something other than running straight, a hard-edged planter looks placed on the space and this one looks drawn into it. The curve is shallow enough to keep the planting even along its length.

One thing to read carefully: the three sizes are not three lengths of the same planter. Depth and height change with length, from twelve by eighteen inches up to twenty by thirty-six. Every other Jay Scotts trough keeps its section and only gets longer, so the usual habit of picking on length alone will get you the wrong object here. The smallest is a low divider at eighteen inches; the largest is a screen at three feet before planting. Free ground at thirty-two and thirty-six inches; freight at forty-eight. The largest stays at seventy pounds before soil because it is fiberglass: non-porous, so it does not take up the water that expands on freezing, and hand-finished to order in the color you choose.

Can the Seoul be used indoors and outdoors?

Yes. It is premium fiberglass, non-porous and UV-resistant, so it does not absorb the water that expands on freezing and does not fade in full sun.

Drainage is what decides it in practice: water left standing in an undrained planter through a freeze is the common failure, not the material.

How big is the Seoul?

Three sizes: 32 x 12 x 18 in, 36 x 16 x 24 in, and 48 x 20 x 36 in. Unlike most of our boxes, each size grows in all three dimensions rather than only in length.

What is the curved shape best for?

A spot seen from the front and the sides at once. The bow-front softens an entry, a reception desk, or a run of seating where a straight-walled box would read as a hard edge.

What can I plant in it?

The opening takes a 10, 14, or 18 in nursery pot depending on size, so it suits an upright grass, a small shrub, or a grouped planting you can lift out and swap.

Does it come with drainage holes?

Not by default, so it can hold a liner. You can add drilled drainage free when you choose your size, though a drilled planter is final sale.

How heavy is it, and how does it ship?

Fiberglass is light for the size: 25.6, 39.7, or 70.1 lb depending on which you choose. The 32 and 36 inch ship free by ground; the 48 inch ships by freight.

Do I have to fill a tall planter with soil all the way down?

No, and on a deep planter you should not. Some models carry an integrated internal ledge about 10 to 12 inches below the rim that holds a nursery pot, so the planting sits at the top and the depth below stays empty. A ledge weighs about 3 to 5 pounds and carries 75 to 100 pounds, and it is made for selected models at extra cost. Without one, lighten the base with empty plastic bottles or jugs. Avoid anything that breaks down, which encourages mold and bacteria.

What soil should I use?

Potting soil, potting mix or container mix only. Topsoil is heavy and gets heavier when wet, which puts outward pressure on the planter walls and compacts where a container mix stays open. Set the root ball one to three inches below the rim, water to settle it, and finish with a top dressing such as river rock or moss.
