A size collection is only useful if it is honest about what the size refers to. Searching for a 36 inch planter usually means one of three quite different things, and buying the wrong one is the most common mistake here.
The three kinds of 36 inch planters
36 inches long. A trough or box measuring 36 inches end to end, typically 8 to 24 inches wide and anywhere from 8 to 42 inches tall. This is what most people mean when they ask for a 36 inch planter for a wall, a railing or a boundary run.
36 inches tall. A column or tapered form standing 36 inches high on a much smaller footprint. Corry and Saint Tropez sit here. Chosen for height beside a door or in a corner, not for planting volume.
36 inches across. A round or square form 36 inches in diameter or width. This is the largest of the three by volume and the heaviest, and it is a centerpiece rather than an edge.

What 36 inches is good for
It is the most useful single size in the catalog, which is why so many models offer it. A 36 inch length covers a meaningful run without becoming a freight problem. A 36 inch height clears a seated sightline and starts to screen a standing one. A 36 inch diameter holds a small tree.
It is also the point where handling changes. Below 36 inches almost everything here is a one or two person lift. Above it, weight and awkwardness climb quickly. Boxed weights across this collection run from 8.5 lb to 323 lb.
What it does not tell you
36 inches outside is not 36 inches inside. The wall has thickness and most forms taper, so the interior opening is always smaller. If you are matching a nursery pot, work from the interior figure.
It says nothing about depth. A 36 inch long trough might be 8 inches deep or 32. Length and depth are independent, and depth is what the planting cares about.
Two 36 inch planters are not necessarily the same shape. A 36 inch Corry and a 36 inch Granada share a number and nothing else. Use the number to filter, then choose on form.
