Outdoor planters usually need drainage. Indoors, most people leave them sealed.

Which should I choose?

Why it matters
Rain and irrigation collect in a sealed planter with nowhere to go. In cold climates that water can freeze and expand, which may damage the planter. Standing water is also hard on most plants.

Do I need it?

  • Outdoors: almost always, especially anywhere that freezes.
  • Indoors: usually not. A sealed planter works as a cachepot or holds a nursery liner, which is what most people want on a floor they would rather keep dry.

What we do
Drilling is free and done before your planter ships, to the manufacturer's specification:

  • 1 to 2 inch holes every 12 inches of planter length.
  • For example, a 60 inch planter gets 4 to 5 holes.
  • If you prefer to drill your own later, use the same spacing. Holes outside these guidelines are not covered by the warranty.

One thing to know

  • Drilling cannot be undone, so a drilled planter is final sale.

Shipping & Delivery

Made to order
Each planter is hand-finished when you order it. Allow 3 to 5 business days of production before your order ships. Gloss finishes need 5 to 7.

Curbside freight delivery
This size ships on a pallet by freight truck for a flat $395, free on orders over $2,000. The driver lowers it to the curb with a liftgate; plan for a second person to move it into place. The carrier will call to schedule a delivery window, so please be available. Freight transit is usually 3 to 5 business days once the pallet leaves, and up to 7 to the Mountain states and the West Coast. You will get tracking when the pallet leaves, and we will confirm the delivery window with you once the carrier books it.

Returns
This size is final sale except for a manufacturer defect or shipping damage.

If it arrives damaged
Inspect the shipment before you sign. Note any damage on the bill of lading or delivery receipt before signing — to the boxes, the planter, or the packing material. A delivery that arrives visibly damaged or not intact may also be refused outright. You are entitled to open each box and inspect the goods; if the driver will not wait, write on the paperwork that you could not check for concealed damage. Report it to us in writing within 24 hours of delivery at customerservice@sereneyards.com, with photos of the damage, the cartons and the packing material, and keep all packaging until the claim is resolved. Damage noted at delivery and reported this way is covered — contact us and we'll make it right, either by replacing the planter or refunding you. Damage not noted at the time of delivery is much harder to resolve, because the carrier claim depends on that record. Full details are in our Shipping Policy.

At forty-two inches the Perth stands level with the Darwin Rectangular, ten inches above the thirty-two inch boxes and high enough to meet a standing person's sightline. That single fact changes what it does. Everything shorter frames a space. This one divides it.

Put a run of them across a restaurant floor and you have made two rooms. Close the open side of a terrace and it becomes an enclosure rather than an edge. Set them in front of a service area, a bin store or a plant room and the problem disappears without a fence appearing. Planting on top adds height to something already tall, so a modest grass reads as a hedge.

It comes in five lengths, from twenty-four inches to seventy-two, and only the length changes: sixteen inches deep and forty-two high throughout. So a long run can be covered in fewer units, and a mixed run still lines up along the top and the front. The twenty-four works on its own as a marker or a corner stop.

Weight it low before planting anything top-heavy, because a box this tall on a sixteen-inch base wants ballast, and every length travels by freight. Fiberglass is what makes that height manageable at all: non-porous, so it does not take up the water that expands on freezing, and hand-finished to order in the color you choose.

Perth Rectangular Planter in the studio

Perth Rectangular in Matte Charcoal

Built to last

Every piece we carry is chosen to last, indoors or out, and look considered for years, not seasons.

Built to last

Inside or out

Non-porous fiberglass with a UV-resistant finish: it does not absorb the water that expands on freezing, so it holds its shape through winter and its color through summer.

Wide, not narrow

A mass, not a line

Sixteen inches deep and forty-two inches tall, the Perth Rectangular reads as a substantial architectural block.

Finished to order

Your color, your space

Each Perth Rectangular is hand-finished in your chosen shade, so the color is specified to the space rather than chosen from what is in stock. The finish is an automotive-grade, UV-resistant paint system.

Finished in your color

Every planter is finished to order in the color you choose, then shipped to you.

Twenty standard finishes, hand-finished to order in the color you choose. Custom colors are available on request. On-screen color is a guide and can vary slightly from the finished paint.

Questions, answered

Can the Perth Rectangular be used indoors and outdoors?

Yes. It is premium fiberglass, non-porous and UV-resistant, so it does not absorb the water that expands on freezing and does not fade in full sun.

Drainage is what decides it in practice: water left standing in an undrained planter through a freeze is the common failure, not the material.

How big is the Perth Rectangular?

Five lengths: 24, 36, 48, 60 or 72 inches, all 16 inches deep and 42 inches high. Only the length changes, so units of different lengths line up along the top and the front.

What is the tall wide shape best for?

It reads as a substantial architectural mass, suited to framing an entry, grounding a long facade, or pairing with the Perth Corner at the end of a run.

What can I plant in it?

The deep opening suits a small tree, an upright grass, or a mixed planting. Use lightweight potting soil only.

Does it come with drainage holes?

Not by default, so it can hold a liner. You can add drilled drainage on request; note a drilled planter is finished to order and non-returnable.

How heavy is it?

Fiberglass is light for the size: about 42 lb packaged at 24 inches rising to 128 lb at 72. Every length ships by freight, and a box this tall on a 16 inch base wants ballast low before planting.

Do I have to fill a tall planter with soil all the way down?

No, and on a deep planter you should not. Some models carry an integrated internal ledge about 10 to 12 inches below the rim that holds a nursery pot, so the planting sits at the top and the depth below stays empty. A ledge weighs about 3 to 5 pounds and carries 75 to 100 pounds, and it is made for selected models at extra cost. Without one, lighten the base with empty plastic bottles or jugs. Avoid anything that breaks down, which encourages mold and bacteria.

What soil should I use?

Potting soil, potting mix or container mix only. Topsoil is heavy and gets heavier when wet, which puts outward pressure on the planter walls and compacts where a container mix stays open. Set the root ball one to three inches below the rim, water to settle it, and finish with a top dressing such as river rock or moss.
