What counts as a small wood stove

Small wood stoves are typically rated for 250 to 1,800 square feet, with fireboxes between roughly 1.0 and 1.9 cubic feet and peak heat output around 50,000 to 65,000 BTU per hour. The size class is the most popular wood stove segment and covers cabins, smaller single-family homes, single-room zone heating, and supplemental heat for grid-tied homes.

How to size to your space

Heated area depends on home insulation, ceiling height, layout, and climate zone. As a starting point, match the manufacturer's rated square footage to your actual heated area, then drop one size if you have cathedral ceilings, single-pane windows, or sit in IECC zones 6 or 7. Burn dry cordwood at 20 percent moisture or less for the rated output.

Installation considerations

Small wood stoves vent through a 6 inch flue into a UL 103 HT factory-built chimney or code-approved masonry chimney with flue liner. Minimum chimney height is 12 to 15 feet depending on model. Clearance to combustibles varies by model and connector pipe type; double wall pipe reduces clearances significantly. Always have installation performed by a certified professional (NFI in the USA, WETT in Canada).
