Globe Planter

Outdoor planters usually need drainage. Indoors, most people leave them sealed.

Which should I choose?

Why it matters
Rain and irrigation collect in a sealed planter with nowhere to go. In cold climates that water can freeze and expand, which may damage the planter. Standing water is also hard on most plants.

Do I need it?

  • Outdoors: almost always, especially anywhere that freezes.
  • Indoors: usually not. A sealed planter works as a cachepot or holds a nursery liner, which is what most people want on a floor they would rather keep dry.

What we do
Drilling is free and done before your planter ships, to the manufacturer's specification:

  • 1 to 2 inch holes every 12 inches of planter length.
  • For example, a 60 inch planter gets 4 to 5 holes.
  • If you prefer to drill your own later, use the same spacing. Holes outside these guidelines are not covered by the warranty.

One thing to know

  • Drilling cannot be undone, so a drilled planter is final sale.

Shipping & Delivery

Made to order
Each planter is hand-finished when you order it. Allow 3 to 5 business days of production before your order ships. Gloss finishes need 5 to 7.

Free ground shipping
This size ships free by ground within the contiguous 48 states. You will receive a tracking number by email the moment your order ships; delivery usually takes another 2 to 7 business days.

Returns
30 days from delivery, in new and unused condition in the original packaging, with a 30% restocking fee.

If it arrives damaged
Inspect the shipment before you sign. Note any damage on the bill of lading or delivery receipt before signing — to the boxes, the planter, or the packing material. A delivery that arrives visibly damaged or not intact may also be refused outright. You are entitled to open each box and inspect the goods; if the driver will not wait, write on the paperwork that you could not check for concealed damage. Report it to us in writing within 24 hours of delivery at customerservice@sereneyards.com, with photos of the damage, the cartons and the packing material, and keep all packaging until the claim is resolved. Damage noted at delivery and reported this way is covered — contact us and we'll make it right, either by replacing the planter or refunding you. Damage not noted at the time of delivery is much harder to resolve, because the carrier claim depends on that record. Full details are in our Shipping Policy.

The Globe is a fiberglass sphere, and a sphere needs room around it. Set it against a wall and a viewer sees a half circle. Set it where people pass on both sides and they see the form it was actually drawn as. Spherical, with the base flattened just enough to sit still, and a circular mouth cut into the top. Push it into a corner and you lose the shape you paid for. Give it open floor, a plinth, or a lawn edge where people pass on both sides, and it reads the way it was drawn.

Three sizes, twenty-four, thirty and thirty-six inches across, and the opening does not keep pace with the body: thirteen and a half inches on the twenty-four, seventeen and a half on the thirty-six. So the bigger it gets the more it is sphere and the less it is container. The planting stays compact and the sphere stays the subject. Size the plant to that figure, not to the label.

At sixteen pounds boxed the smallest is easy to move, and light enough that wind will shift it before it is planted, so fill it where you want it. The 24 inch ships free by ground; the 30 and 36 inch travel by freight, because the body is bulky for what it weighs.

The material is non-porous, so it does not take up the water that expands on freezing, and it does not heat the way metal does, which matters on a form this exposed. Hand-finished to order in the color you choose.

Globe Planter in the studio

A single round note in the garden.

Built to last

Every piece we carry is chosen to last, indoors or out, and look considered for years, not seasons.

Built to last

Inside or out

Non-porous fiberglass with a UV-resistant finish: it does not absorb the water that expands on freezing, so it holds its shape through winter and its color through summer.

One clean form

A sphere, seen from every side

The Globe is a full sphere, meant to be seen in the round on a floor or plinth rather than tucked against a wall.

Finished to order

Your color, your space

Each Globe is hand-finished in your chosen shade, so the color is specified to the space rather than chosen from what is in stock. The finish is an automotive-grade, UV-resistant paint system.

Finished in your color

Every planter is finished to order in the color you choose, then shipped to you.

Twenty standard finishes, hand-finished to order in the color you choose. Custom colors are available on request. On-screen color is a guide and can vary slightly from the finished paint.

Questions, answered

Can the Globe be used indoors and outdoors?

Yes. It’s premium fiberglass, non-porous and UV-resistant, so it does not absorb the water that expands on freezing and does not fade in full sun. Add drainage if it will live outdoors so rain does not collect in the body.

Drainage is what decides it in practice: water left standing in an undrained planter through a freeze is the common failure, not the material.

What size is it?

Three sizes: 24, 30 or 36 inches across, standing 19, 24 and 30 inches tall. The opening is 13.4, 15.4 and 17.4 inches, so it grows more slowly than the body does.

What can I plant in it?

A mounding or trailing plant that spills over the round opening looks best, softening the sphere, or a single sculptural specimen that echoes the form.

Does it come with drainage holes?

Not by default, so it can hold a liner or double as a cachepot. You can add drilled drainage on request; note a drilled planter is finished to order and non-returnable.

How heavy is it?

Light for its size: about 16.6 lb packaged at 24 inches, 25.4 at 30 and 40.3 at 36, all easy for one person to move and position before planting. The 24 inch ships free by ground. The 30 and 36 inch ship by freight, because the body is bulky for what it weighs.

How long until it ships?

Each planter is finished to order in your chosen color and ships in about three to five business days, or five to seven for gloss finishes, and the 30 and 36 inch ship by freight (flat $395 fee, free over $2,000).

Do I have to fill a tall planter with soil all the way down?

No, and on a deep planter you should not. Some models carry an integrated internal ledge about 10 to 12 inches below the rim that holds a nursery pot, so the planting sits at the top and the depth below stays empty. A ledge weighs about 3 to 5 pounds and carries 75 to 100 pounds, and it is made for selected models at extra cost. Without one, lighten the base with empty plastic bottles or jugs. Avoid anything that breaks down, which encourages mold and bacteria.

What soil should I use?

Potting soil, potting mix or container mix only. Topsoil is heavy and gets heavier when wet, which puts outward pressure on the planter walls and compacts where a container mix stays open. Set the root ball one to three inches below the rim, water to settle it, and finish with a top dressing such as river rock or moss.
