The Montroy is a true cube, equal on all three axes, so it has no front. Set it down anywhere and there is no orientation to get right. That sounds like a small thing until you are placing six of them along a rooftop edge.

Repetition is what the form is for. A single cube is a quiet object. Four flanking a pair of doors, or a run of them lining a terrace, becomes the structure of the space rather than an object in it. The square holds an edge where a round pot softens one, which suits clipped forms, boxwood and anything with a deliberate outline.

One number is worth knowing before ordering. The interior is 2.8 inches narrower than the exterior, and it is 2.8 inches at every one of the ten sizes, so the twelve-inch cube takes an eight-inch nursery pot rather than a twelve-inch one. Choose by the pot you mean to drop in and the sizes make sense at once.

The range is wider than it looks. Twelve to sixty inches is a five-fold step in width and about a hundred and twenty-five-fold in volume, and the weight follows: eight and a half pounds boxed at the smallest, three hundred and twenty-three at the largest. Up to twenty inches it is a planter one person carries and ships by ground. From twenty-eight inches it travels by freight and wants deciding before it arrives, and the two largest are placed once. Fiberglass rather than cast stone is what keeps even those numbers reasonable: non-porous, so it does not take up the water that expands on freezing, and hand-finished to order in the color you choose.

Can the Montroy Cube be used indoors and outdoors?

Yes. It's premium fiberglass, non-porous and UV-resistant, so it does not absorb the water that expands on freezing and does not fade in full sun.

Drainage is what decides it in practice: water left standing in an undrained planter through a freeze is the common failure, not the material.

What size should I choose?

Sizes are the exterior cube dimension, from 12" to 60". The planting opening is 2.8" narrower than the exterior at every size, so a 12" cube opens at about 9.2" and a 60" at 57.2". Choose by the nursery pot you mean to drop in: 8" fits the 12", 17" fits both the 20" and the 24", and the two largest sizes take four smaller pots rather than one.

Does it come with drainage holes?

Not by default, so it can hold water or a liner. You can add drilled drainage on request; note a drilled planter is finished to order and non-returnable.

How heavy is it?

It ranges widely: about 8.5 lb packaged at 12", 23.6 lb at 20", 78 lb at 36" and 323 lb at 60". The three smallest are a one-person lift empty. From 24" plan on two people, and the 48" and 60" need equipment. A filled planter is heavier again at every size.

Can I use it indoors?

Yes. The Montroy works indoors or outdoors, from lobbies and living rooms to patios and rooftops.

How long until it ships?

Each planter is finished to order in your chosen color and ships in about three to five business days, or five to seven for gloss finishes. The 12", 16", 20" and 24" sizes go by free ground shipping; 28" and larger ship by freight.

Do I have to fill a tall planter with soil all the way down?

No, and on a deep planter you should not. Some models carry an integrated internal ledge about 10 to 12 inches below the rim that holds a nursery pot, so the planting sits at the top and the depth below stays empty. A ledge weighs about 3 to 5 pounds and carries 75 to 100 pounds, and it is made for selected models at extra cost. Without one, lighten the base with empty plastic bottles or jugs. Avoid anything that breaks down, which encourages mold and bacteria.

What soil should I use?

Potting soil, potting mix or container mix only. Topsoil is heavy and gets heavier when wet, which puts outward pressure on the planter walls and compacts where a container mix stays open. Set the root ball one to three inches below the rim, water to settle it, and finish with a top dressing such as river rock or moss.
