The Toulan is the square answer to a column. Flat faces, sharp corners, and a body that stands about twice as tall as it is wide at all six sizes.

Squareness is what it is for. A round planter of the same height reads as softer, and in a setting with straight lines already in it, a doorway or a run of glazing or a paved edge, the softer thing can look like it wandered in from somewhere else. Flat faces pick up the lines that are already there. The taper toward the base then stops the whole thing from reading as a solid pillar, so it has height without mass.

The proportion holds as it grows: twelve by twenty-two, sixteen by thirty, eighteen by thirty-six, twenty by forty-two, twenty-three by forty-eight, twenty-eight by sixty. That is unusual, since most families get squatter in their larger sizes, and it means a pair in different sizes still look related.

Where the range divides is what the planter is doing. Up to eighteen inches it is a marker beside a door, light enough for one person and shipped by ground. From twenty inches it passes waist height, travels by freight and starts dividing space instead of punctuating it; the twenty-eight stands five feet tall before anything is planted in it. Note the pot figures throughout, which are smaller than the outside suggests because the base narrows, and ballast the bottom before planting anything with a canopy. Fiberglass is what makes the five-foot size a delivery rather than an installation at ninety-six pounds: non-porous, so it does not take up the water that expands on freezing, and hand-finished to order in the color you choose.

Can the Toulan be used indoors and outdoors?

Yes. It’s premium fiberglass, non-porous and UV-resistant, so it does not absorb the water that expands on freezing and does not fade in full sun.

Drainage is what decides it in practice: water left standing in an undrained planter through a freeze is the common failure, not the material.

What size should I choose?

Sizes are the square width across the top: 12, 16, or 18 inches, standing 22, 30, and 36 inches tall. Each tapers to a smaller square base, and the planting openings are about 8.7, 11.5, and 13.2 inches across.

Is the Toulan tapered?

Yes. It is widest at a crisp square rim and draws inward to a smaller square base, so a tall planter reads as a light column rather than a heavy block.

What can I plant in it?

The vessel is deep, which suits an upright specimen such as a slim tree, a clipped boxwood, or a tall ornamental grass. A trailing plant at the rim softens the square edge.

Does it come with drainage holes?

Not by default, so it can hold a liner or double as a cachepot. You can add drilled drainage on request; note a drilled planter is finished to order and non-returnable.

How heavy is it?

Fiberglass is light for the size: about 12.1 lb (12"), 25.2 lb (16"), and 32.7 lb (18"), easy for one person to move before it is planted.

Do I have to fill a tall planter with soil all the way down?

No, and on a deep planter you should not. Some models carry an integrated internal ledge about 10 to 12 inches below the rim that holds a nursery pot, so the planting sits at the top and the depth below stays empty. A ledge weighs about 3 to 5 pounds and carries 75 to 100 pounds, and it is made for selected models at extra cost. Without one, lighten the base with empty plastic bottles or jugs. Avoid anything that breaks down, which encourages mold and bacteria.

What soil should I use?

Potting soil, potting mix or container mix only. Topsoil is heavy and gets heavier when wet, which puts outward pressure on the planter walls and compacts where a container mix stays open. Set the root ball one to three inches below the rim, water to settle it, and finish with a top dressing such as river rock or moss.
