Most round planters are cones. The Wannsee is closer to a cylinder, and that changes what happens under the soil line. Its interior diameter is about ninety percent of its exterior at every size, so the wall barely draws in and the volume at the bottom is nearly the volume at the top. Roots reaching down find the same room they had at the rim instead of running into a narrowing cone. It is why a twenty-two inch body swallows an eighteen inch nursery pot, a size most tapered planters of that diameter will not take, and why the fifty inch takes a forty.

Seven sizes run from fifteen to fifty inches across, and the proportion holds the whole way: height tracks diameter, so two of them at different sizes read as one family rather than two objects. What changes is what the planter is for. The fifteen and twenty-two inch sizes are balcony and roof terrace planters. From twenty-seven inches it is a ground-level body wide enough for a small multi-stem tree with underplanting around it.

Weight follows the same curve. The fifteen inch is the lightest Jay Scotts round planter we carry, which is what makes it a terrace planter; plant it or weight it before leaving it somewhere exposed. The fifty inch is placed once.

The fiberglass is non-porous throughout, so it does not take up the water that expands on freezing, and the walls do not heat the way metal does, which keeps roots out of the swings a dark planter in full sun would otherwise pass on to them. Hand-finished to order in the color you choose.

Questions, answered

Can the Wannsee be used indoors and outdoors?

Yes. It is premium fiberglass, non-porous and UV-resistant, so it does not absorb the water that expands on freezing and does not fade in full sun.

Drainage is what decides it in practice: water left standing in an undrained planter through a freeze is the common failure, not the material.

How big is the Wannsee?

Seven sizes: 15, 22, 27, 33, 39, 44 or 50 inches across the top, standing 13 to 44 inches tall. The wall is close to vertical, so the interior diameter stays at about 90 percent of the exterior at every size.

What is the rounded shape best for?

Its soft, rounded form reads calmer than a sharp-edged box or column, so it suits an entry, a patio corner, or a cluster of mixed heights.

What can I plant in it?

The wide, open top suits a full mounding planting, a small tree, or a single specimen plant. Use lightweight potting soil only.

Does it come with drainage holes?

Not by default, so it can hold a liner or double as a cachepot. You can add drilled drainage on request; note a drilled planter is finished to order and non-returnable.

How heavy is it?

Fiberglass is light for the size: about 5.6 lb packaged for the 15" and 12.7 lb for the 22", both a one-person lift empty. The larger sizes climb to 43.7 lb at 39" and 131 lb at 50", so set those in place before filling.

Do I have to fill a tall planter with soil all the way down?

No, and on a deep planter you should not. Some models carry an integrated internal ledge about 10 to 12 inches below the rim that holds a nursery pot, so the planting sits at the top and the depth below stays empty. A ledge weighs about 3 to 5 pounds and carries 75 to 100 pounds, and it is made for selected models at extra cost. Without one, lighten the base with empty plastic bottles or jugs. Avoid anything that breaks down, which encourages mold and bacteria.

What soil should I use?

Potting soil, potting mix or container mix only. Topsoil is heavy and gets heavier when wet, which puts outward pressure on the planter walls and compacts where a container mix stays open. Set the root ball one to three inches below the rim, water to settle it, and finish with a top dressing such as river rock or moss.
