The Rio Grande is a wide, straight-sided cylinder in fiberglass. Its walls rise vertically from a flat base to a full-width round rim, holding one clean diameter top to bottom, so it reads as a low, solid drum rather than a tapered pot. At 20 and 22 inches tall and nearly as wide, it sits low and grounded beside a bench, at the base of a wall, or in a row along a walkway.

Made from premium composite fiberglass, it stays light enough for one person to reposition yet strong enough to live outside year-round, through freezing winters and full sun, without cracking, rusting, or fading. The wide, open mouth and generous volume suit a full mounding planting, a clipped shrub, or a small multi-stem tree that can spread over the straight rim. Each Rio Grande is finished to order in your chosen color and drilled for drainage only if you ask, so it arrives ready for the spot you have in mind.

Why this planter

Built to live outside

Every piece we carry is chosen to survive real weather and look considered for years, not seasons.

Built for weather

Made to live outside

Frost-proof, UV-stable fiberglass holds its color and shape through freezing winters and full sun.

One clean diameter

A low, solid drum

Vertical walls hold a single diameter from base to rim, so it reads as a grounded cylinder rather than a tapered pot, and sits calmly in a row.

Finished to order

Your color, your space

Each Rio Grande is hand-finished in your chosen shade, so the color is part of the planter rather than a coat on top of it.

Finished to order

Finished in your color

Nothing here sits in a warehouse. Every planter is hand-finished in the color you choose, then shipped to your door.

All twenty standard finishes are shown here, each hand-finished to order in the color you choose, at no extra cost. On-screen color is a guide and can vary from the finished paint. Ask us about a sprayed color sample for an exact match.

Living with it

Care & placement

Placement

The Rio Grande works indoors or outdoors in any climate. Its fiberglass body is frost-proof and UV-stable, so it can stay outside year-round without cracking or fading.

Drainage

Ordered without holes by default, so it can hold a liner or double as a cachepot. Add drilled drainage on request; a drilled planter is finished to order and non-returnable.

Care

Fill with lightweight potting soil only, never garden soil, sand, or rocks. Wipe clean with mild soap and water; an occasional wax keeps the finish bright, and touch-up paint is available for deeper scratches.

Handling

Fiberglass is light for the size (about 13.6 to 18.9 lb empty), but the cylinder is wide, so set it in its final spot before planting.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Rio Grande stay outside year-round?

Yes. It is premium fiberglass, frost-proof and UV-stable, so it handles freezing winters and full sun without cracking or fading.

What size should I choose?

Two sizes: 18 inches wide by 20 tall, or 22 by 22, each a straight-sided cylinder with a full-width opening about 15.6 or 19.2 inches across. They weigh about 13.6 and 18.9 lb empty.

What is the cylinder shape best for?

It is a wide, straight-sided cylinder with a full-width round rim. The open mouth and generous volume, about 18.5 or 31.7 gallons, suit a full planting or a specimen that can spread over the straight rim.

What can I plant in it?

The wide, deep body suits a full mounding planting, a clipped shrub, or a small multi-stem tree. Use lightweight potting soil only, not garden soil, sand, or rocks.

Does it come with drainage holes?

Not by default, so it can hold a liner or double as a cachepot. You can add drilled drainage on request; note a drilled planter is finished to order and non-returnable.

How heavy is it?

Fiberglass is light for the size: about 13.6 lb for the 18 inch and 18.9 lb for the 22 inch, empty, so one person can move it before planting.
