Why ground-shippable is the filter that matters

Most rooftop planter guidance starts with material. That is the wrong end. Fiberglass is already the lightest premium option, so on a roof the useful question is not what the planter is made of but whether it can get there and what it weighs once planted.

Ground shipping means the piece is within parcel limits on geometry and billable weight. In practice that also means it arrives by courier rather than kerbside on a pallet, it can be moved by one or two people, and it fits through the openings a building actually has. Every planter here has at least one size that clears that bar. Each product page states which mode applies to each individual size, because the boundary usually falls between sizes of the same model.

What this collection does not solve

It does not tell you what your roof can carry. Nothing on this page does. Live-load ratings vary by more than tenfold between a standard commercial roof and a purpose-built green roof, and only your building's engineer of record can tell you which applies. Empty weight is not the number that matters. Saturated soil weighs roughly 80 pounds per cubic foot and dominates the total. A planter that weighs 25 pounds empty can exceed 700 pounds planted. The packaged weight we publish is for delivery planning and lift access; the planted weight is what the roof carries.

Ground-shippable does not mean roof-appropriate. A planter can be light enough to deliver and still be wrong for the position, because of point loading, wind exposure, or the drainage arrangement under it. Treat this collection as the set worth considering, not a set that has been cleared.

Pool decks add chemistry, not weight. Splash-out carries chlorinated or salt water into the planting. That affects the plants far more than the planter, since fiberglass is unaffected by either, but it is worth planning irrigation to flush rather than concentrate it.

Wind, drainage and placement

At height, wind becomes a stability factor. Wider, lower planters with dense root mass stay put; tall narrow ones present a sail on a small base. Grouping planters gives mutual shelter, and ballast in the base lowers the centre of gravity. How much of this you need depends on height, exposure and the surrounding buildings, which makes it a project judgement rather than a rule of thumb.

Drainage on a roof or deck needs somewhere for the water to go and a surface that tolerates it arriving. We drill drainage free of charge on request; it is not drilled by default, because installations over finished surfaces and waterproofing membranes often need the planter sealed or paired with a liner. Drilled planters are final sale, so decide before ordering.

Material, finish and delivery

Every planter here is fiberglass composite in one of twenty finishes. The finish is an automotive-grade, UV-resistant paint system, the material is non-porous and the finish is UV-resistant, and it does not crack in freeze-thaw the way porous materials do, which matters on an exposed roof more than almost anywhere else. Kept well drained, the material does not absorb water and so does not crack in freeze-thaw the way porous planters do. Jay Scotts covers them with a three year manufacturer warranty.

On a roof the planter is rarely the thing at risk. Water that cannot drain freezes, thaws and finds the membrane, and water that pools under a planter and overflows in a January thaw is a roofing problem rather than a planting one. On a waterproofed surface, decide where the water goes before you decide how the planter drains.

How do large planters get onto a roof?

Usually a service lift, occasionally a stair, and for the biggest pieces a crane lift booked separately. That is why ground-shippable sizes are worth filtering for: they arrive by courier in a carton one or two people can handle, rather than kerbside on a pallet. Measure the narrowest point of the route, not the space the planter is going into, because the route is almost always the constraint.

Are these planters suitable for balconies?

Many of the smaller sizes are, and the same logic applies: weight, access and drainage. Balconies often have lower load ratings than roofs and stricter rules about water discharge over the edge, so check the building's own requirements.
