What is Cosapots?

Cosapots is a Belgian-designed collection from The Pots Company NV, headquartered at Evolis Business Park in Kortrijk, Belgium. The planters themselves are made in Vietnam. Cosapots states that every planter is “100% handmade by highly skilled craftsmen in Vietnam, a country with a rich history in high quality craftmanship in pottery.”

The collection is built around a small number of geometric forms: a sphere, a cube, a column, a bowl, a trough, rather than a wide catalog of decorative shapes. That is what makes it read as architectural rather than ornamental.

What are Cosapots planters made of?

Cosapots planters are made from a material the manufacturer calls Cohesa: fiberglass combined with polyester and natural materials, colored with natural colorants. The manufacturer describes the result as having the look of heavy stone while remaining lightweight, and publishes it as UV- and frost-resistant, and as impermeable. The catalog also describes a high, solid inner rim that conceals the interior framework, so the structure stays hidden and the rim reads as a finished edge.

It is worth being precise about the category. Cohesa is a fiberglass-and-polyester composite. It is not cast stone, and it weighs a fraction of what solid stone does at the same size. The surface reads as stone; the handling does not.

Each planter also ships sealed, with a watertight layer on the inside. That is why an undrilled Cosapots works indoors as a cachepot: it holds water rather than passing it to the floor. It is also why drainage matters outdoors, which is covered below.

What is the Cosapots warranty?

According to the Cosapots warranty, every planter carries a five-year warranty from the time of first purchase, covering the initial purchaser against manufacturing defects in normal use. At The Pots Company's sole discretion an approved claim may be repaired, or exchanged for the original purchase price, with a damaged product replaced free of charge by an equivalent product from the portfolio. Because the warranty period is long, that replacement may differ in color, shape or size from the original.

The warranty does not cover vandalism, theft, modifications, accidental damage, extreme forces of nature, or wrong use. A claim needs the dated invoice and photographs of the damage.

Drainage: what the manufacturer specifies

The Pots Company is specific about this, and it is the one step that decides whether an outdoor Cosapots comes through a freeze.

For all outdoor use, drainage holes must be drilled so water can drain from the planter. The manufacturer notes this matters most in regions that have freezing temperatures. The Pots Company publishes a matrix covering the different models, and we drill to that specification for the model you order.

The same sheet adds that the purchaser should protect the terrace from the rinse of growing media: substrate, soil or hydro pellets washing out of the drainage holes onto paving.

Drainage holes can be added free of charge, drilled to Cosapots' own specification before the planter ships. Choose the option on the product page beside the size selector. Drilling cannot be undone, so we treat a drilled planter as final sale.

Skip the gravel layer at the bottom. It is the most persistent piece of bad container advice, and it does the opposite of what people expect: a coarse layer under a finer mix perches the water table higher up rather than letting it drain away. As Washington State University Extension puts it, gravitational water will not move from a finely textured soil into a coarser material until the finer soil is saturated, so the gravel raises the waterlogged zone rather than lowering it. University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources reaches the same conclusion.

Handling and care

The manufacturer's handling guidance is specific and worth following, because damage in transit or installation is not covered. Cosapots ship in a carton with protective film. Keep the film on until the planter is in its final position. When moving a planter on a pallet or crate, secure the straps to the pallet and never to the planter itself, and never lift a Cosapots planter by its rim.

How to pot a Cosapots planter

The manufacturer's own sequence, from the planting instructions:

  1. Drill a hole or holes in the bottom for outdoor use.
  2. Fill the pot with substrate. The manufacturer advises taking guidance from a plant specialist on the mix.
  3. Fill the substrate up to the line marked by the underside of the inner rim. Cosapots uses a deliberately thin rim, and its underside is the maximum fill line.
  4. Cover the substrate with bark chippings.
  5. Never exceed the maximum weight of the planter.

How to clean a Cosapots planter

The manufacturer is unusually restrictive here, and following it protects the warranty: use a soft sponge, and only a little water or the Cosapots cleaning spray. Never use an abrasive cloth or abrasive cleaner, and never use chemical or corrosive products. Misuse is not covered.

Who Cosapots suits, and when to consider something else

Cosapots is a good fit if you want the presence of stone without its installed weight: rooftop terraces and balconies where load matters, hospitality and office entries, pool decks, and modern residential schemes. It suits buyers who value hand-finished variation and are comfortable at a premium price.

Consider another line if you need an exact custom paint match or a bespoke dimension, if you need planters that arrive with factory-drilled holes as standard, or if the planter will be repositioned often once planted. In that case work from the planted weight, not the empty weight.

Frequently asked questions

Are Cosapots planters frost resistant?

Cosapots publishes the collection as UV- and frost-resistant, and the body does not absorb water the way porous terracotta does. Frost resistance is not a substitute for drainage, though: for outdoor planting the manufacturer still requires drainage holes, and says this matters most in regions that freeze.

Can Cosapots planters be used indoors?

Yes. Because the interior is sealed watertight, an undrilled Cosapots holds water rather than passing it to the floor, so it works indoors as a cachepot or around a nursery liner.
