Fiberglass planters are moulded composite vessels built for outdoor use. A glass-fibre mat is laid into a mould and bound with resin, which produces a shell that is thin, rigid and light for its size. That combination is why fiberglass dominates large-format outdoor planting: it is the only premium material that gets to 72 inches without becoming a lifting problem. Every planter we carry is fiberglass composite.

Why fiberglass rather than concrete, stone or plastic

Against concrete and cast stone. A large fiberglass planter weighs a fraction of the equivalent in concrete, which changes what is possible on a terrace, a roof or an upper floor. It also changes who can install it: two people rather than equipment. The finished appearance is close enough that the difference is rarely visible once planted.

Against plastic and resin. Moulded plastic is a few-season product. It becomes brittle in sun, and colour is a surface treatment that chalks. Fiberglass takes an automotive-grade, UV-resistant paint system that holds its colour in full sun, and because the shell is non-porous it does not absorb the water that cracks porous materials in a freeze.

Against terracotta and ceramic. Porous materials absorb water, and absorbed water expands when it freezes. That is the mechanism behind most cracked planters. Fiberglass is not porous, so it is non-porous in a way fired clay cannot be.

What fiberglass does not do

It is worth being straight about the trade-offs, because they decide some specifications.

Fiberglass is light, which is usually the advantage and occasionally the drawback. A tall, narrow, empty fiberglass planter in an exposed position can move in strong wind. Once planted, the soil column supplies the ballast, but during installation and on very exposed sites it is worth planning for.

It is rigid rather than flexible. A hard impact on a corner can chip the shell where a plastic planter would flex. In practice this matters at loading docks and in service corridors more than in finished installations.

It costs more than plastic. On a commercial installation the relevant comparison is not the unit price but the replacement cycle, including the labour of pulling and replanting a scheme every few seasons.

Finish, colour and weathering

Our range runs to twenty finishes across matte, satin, gloss and metallic. The colour is an automotive-grade, UV-resistant paint system applied to order. The material is UV-resistant, so it holds its colour in full sun rather than fading and chalking the way untreated plastics do.

Matte finishes hide surface dust and fingerprints best and are the usual choice for high-traffic commercial settings. Gloss reads as more decorative and shows water spotting more readily. Metallics are the most reflective and are best judged in the light they will actually sit in.

Size, fit and what we publish

For every size of every planter we publish three figures that most listings leave out: the exterior dimensions, the interior opening, and the nursery grow pot it accepts.

Exterior dimensions decide whether the planter fits the space, the doorway and the lift. The interior opening is always smaller, because wall thickness and the rim band take several inches off a large unit, and it is the number that decides whether a root ball actually goes in. Grow pot capacity is the practical figure for anyone dropping in pre-grown stock, and on a long trough that is often three or four pots rather than a single mass planting.

If you are sizing a scheme from scratch rather than matching an existing one, work from the plant outward rather than from the space inward.

Drainage, weight and delivery

Drainage is drilled free of charge on request. It is not drilled by default, because interior installations, liner-based schemes and planters over finished surfaces often need to stay sealed. Drilled planters are final sale, so decide before ordering.

We publish a packaged weight for every size. That is the shipping weight including packaging, which is the figure to use for delivery planning and lift access. It is not the figure to use for structural load: a planter full of saturated soil weighs many times its empty weight, and on a roof or terrace the load question has to be settled with the building's engineer before the planter is chosen. These are made to order rather than picked from stock, so allow two to ten business days of production before shipping. Standard sizes ship free by ground within the contiguous United States. Larger units ship by freight at a flat 495 dollars, free on orders over 2,000 dollars. Each product page states which mode applies to each individual size, because the boundary falls between sizes of the same model rather than between models.

Are fiberglass planters good for outdoor use?

Yes, and outdoor use is what they are designed for. Fiberglass is non-porous, so it does not absorb water and crack in freeze-thaw the way terracotta and other fired clays do, and the finish is a UV-resistant automotive-grade paint system rather than the thin surface pigment that chalks on moulded plastic. The practical requirement is drainage: a fiberglass planter left to hold standing water through a freezing winter will fail earlier than one that drains, whatever the material is rated for.

How long do fiberglass planters last?

Three worth knowing. They are light, so a tall empty planter in an exposed position can move in strong wind before it is planted and the soil supplies ballast. Why are fiberglass planters so expensive?

Because they are hand-laid rather than injection-moulded, and because each planter is finished to order with an automotive-grade, UV-resistant paint system rather than coming out of the mould in a stock colour. That is a slower process with more material and more finishing. Against plastic the comparison that matters is the replacement cycle. Moulded plastic becomes brittle in sun and its colour is a surface treatment that chalks, so it is replaced on a few-season rhythm. Fiberglass is not on that rhythm, and every replacement avoided is also the labour of pulling and replanting avoided.

Do fiberglass planters crack in winter?

Not from freeze-thaw in the way porous materials do, because fiberglass does not absorb water into its structure. What does cause winter failure is water trapped inside an undrained planter, which expands as it freezes and pushes outward on the shell. Drainage is the thing that protects a planter through a winter, not the material alone.

What size fiberglass planter do I need?

Work from the plant rather than the space. Allow two inches of extra diameter over the nursery pot for small plants and four to six inches for anything above a 10 inch grow pot, with enough depth that the root ball sits level with the soil line. Do fiberglass planters need drainage holes?

Can fiberglass planters be used indoors?

Yes. Every model we carry except the railing-mounted Tiergarden is suitable for indoor or outdoor use, which is why fiberglass is the standard material in hotel lobbies and office atria. Indoors the practical difference is drainage: order undrilled and plan for a liner, or have us drill and plan for where the water goes.

What is the difference between fiberglass and fiberstone planters?

Fiberstone is a composite with stone powder added to the resin, which gives a heavier, more textured, stone-like surface. Fiberglass is lighter and smoother, and holds a wider range of finishes including gloss and metallic. For elevated installations the weight difference is the deciding factor.
