Fire Magic Legacy Charcoal Size Guide: 24″–30″ Built-In & Post-Mount

Cutout dimensions, clearances, charcoal pan and smoker hood specs, and post-mount installation for the Legacy Charcoal lineup — 12-SC01C-A & 14-SC01C-A 304 stainless built-ins, 22-SC01C post-mount, and the powder-coated Lift-A-Fire 3339.

At a Glance

No gas, no electricity. Legacy Charcoal grills run on charcoal only — no gas line, no 120V outlet, no battery. Light with a chimney starter; manage temperature via the adjustable charcoal pan and smoker hood air shutters.

Two construction tiers. SC01C series (12-SC01C-A, 14-SC01C-A, 22-SC01C) is 304 stainless steel with smoker hood, adjustable charcoal pan, and front-loading charcoal door — all included. Lift-A-Fire 3339 is powder-coated steel; cooking grids must be ordered separately.

Cutout heights are uniform at 12″. Legacy charcoal cutouts run deeper than the gas-grill lineup (12″ vs 11½″) to accommodate the larger ash collection drawer and charcoal pan mechanism beneath the cooking surface.

Side wall clearance: 18″ minimum. Rear wall: 4″ from non-combustible, 14″ from protected combustible, 18″ from unprotected combustible. Corner walls: 24″. Backsplash: 4″ minimum (non-combustible). Same envelope as the gas lineup.

Post-mount 22-SC01C is taller. Closed-hood post-mount height is 49¼″, open-hood 60¼″. The post-mount uses a 304 stainless steel pedestal — patio bolt-down (P6) or in-ground concrete footing (G6).

Lift-A-Fire 3339 cutout is smaller. 24¾″ × 17¾″ × 12″ — narrower and shallower than the SC01C 24″ built-in (26¼″ × 19¾″ × 12″). The Lift-A-Fire has no smoker hood and no analog thermometer.

How to Measure Your Opening

Different process for built-in vs post-mount installations

Built-in install (12-SC01C-A, 14-SC01C-A, Lift-A-Fire 3339)

Three dimensions decide whether the head will drop in:

  • Width. Side-to-side along the front face of the island. Cutout width is 26¼″ (12-SC01C-A 24″), 32¼″ (14-SC01C-A 30″), or 24¾″ (Lift-A-Fire 3339 24″).
  • Depth. Front-to-back from the inside of the front island wall to the inside of the back wall. Cutout depth is 19¾″ on the SC01C series and 17¾″ on the Lift-A-Fire 3339 — different chassis depth.
  • Height (drop). Top-of-counter down to the bottom of the island enclosure. Cutout height is 12″ across the entire Legacy charcoal built-in lineup. Note this is ½″ deeper than the Fire Magic gas-grill lineup (11½″) — the extra depth accommodates the charcoal pan mechanism and ash collection.

Post-mount install (22-SC01C-P6, 22-SC01C-G6)

Post-mount Legacy charcoal grills install on a 304 stainless steel pedestal — no cutout required. Confirm:

  • Open-hood overhead clearance. 60¼″ from the ground to the top of the open hood. Plan to clear pergolas, awnings, and overhead structures at hood-open height.
  • Closed-hood overall height. 49¼″ at hood-closed.
  • Foundation. P6 (patio post) bolts to a finished, hard, level surface. G6 (in-ground) extends 18″ below ground into a concrete footing.
  • Footprint. Maximum overall outer width with side shelves 55½″, maximum overall depth 29″.
⚠️

Lift-A-Fire 3339 cooking grids are sold separately

The Lift-A-Fire 3339 ships without cooking grids — they must be ordered separately as accessories. Standard stainless steel grids fit the 23″ × 16″ cooking surface; check the Fire Magic accessory catalog for compatible grid models. Plan the grid purchase alongside the grill order to avoid delaying the first cook.

SC01C and Lift-A-Fire are different chassis families

The 12-SC01C-A and 14-SC01C-A built-ins use a 304 stainless steel chassis with a 19¾″ cutout depth and an integrated stainless smoker hood. The Lift-A-Fire 3339 uses a powder-coated steel chassis with a 17¾″ cutout depth — different rough-opening dimension. The Lift-A-Fire ships without an oven hood; a hood is available as an optional accessory but adds height to the installed unit.

Post-Mount Specs (22-SC01C)

Patio post and in-ground stand dimensions

Variant SKU Hood open Hood closed Top of shelf Below ground (G6) Outer width (w/ shelves) Outer depth
22-SC01C patio post (NG hardware) 22-SC01C-P6 60¼″ 49¼″ 37″ 55½″ 29″
22-SC01C in-ground post 22-SC01C-G6 60¼″ 49¼″ 37″ 18″ 55½″ 29″

Patio post (P6) — bolt-down installation

The 22-SC01C-P6 ships with a 304 stainless steel pedestal welded to a base plate. Bolt the base plate to a finished, level patio surface using the supplied anchor hardware. The patio surface must be hard, flat, and sized to fully accommodate the base plate footprint with anchor hardware extending into the substrate. Sit clear of the 18″ horizontal clearance envelope from any combustible material on all sides.

In-ground post (G6) — concrete footing installation

The 22-SC01C-G6 extends 18″ below ground into a concrete footing. Pour the footing per local code for frost depth and soil conditions. Set the post plumb in wet concrete; brace until cure. The cured footing must encase the bottom 18″ of the post, extend below local frost depth, sit level at the surface, and be sized for the moment load of the grill at hood-open with prevailing wind exposure.

Clearance Requirements

Minimum distances from the grill body to any combustible material

Per the Fire Magic owner's manual, the same clearance envelope applies to the Legacy Charcoal lineup as the gas-grill lineup. Built-in and post-mount installations both measure from the grill body (not the post or the cutout edge) to any adjacent combustible material.

Side wall, corner, and adjacent appliances

Side wall18″ min
Corner wall24″ min
Cooling appliance14″ min
Heating appliance12″ min

Rear wall — depends on construction

Rear wall type Minimum clearance Notes
Non-combustible (brick, masonry, stainless steel) 4″ Allows ventilation and prevents overheating.
Protected combustible (4″ non-combustible substrate over combustible wall) 14″ 4″ substrate plus 10″ clearance.
Unprotected combustible (wood-frame wall) 18″ Required if no non-combustible barrier is installed.

Backsplash and overhead

If a non-combustible backsplash is installed, it must have a minimum 4″ clearance from the rear of the unit. Maintain a horizontal clearance of 18″ in all directions from any combustible material or item. The grill cannot be operated under a combustible overhead structure (covered porch, awning, deck soffit, gazebo ceiling) unless an approved heavy-duty vent hood is installed and operated whenever the grill is in use.

Outdoor use only — charcoal produces carbon monoxide

Every Fire Magic charcoal grill is for outdoor use only. Never burn charcoal in any building, garage, recreational vehicle, boat, or other enclosed area. Charcoal combustion produces carbon monoxide; using a charcoal grill in an enclosed area can be fatal. Allow ash and embers to cool fully before disposal — store cooled ashes in a sealed metal container away from any combustible material.

Charcoal Management

Charcoal pan, smoker hood, lighting, and ash handling

Adjustable charcoal pan

Every Legacy charcoal grill ships with an adjustable charcoal pan beneath the cooking grid. On the SC01C series (12-SC01C-A, 14-SC01C-A, 22-SC01C), a crank handle on the front of the unit raises and lowers the charcoal pan — bring the pan close to the grid for high-heat searing, drop it lower for indirect cooking and smoking. The Lift-A-Fire 3339 uses a similar adjustable pan operated via a side lever ("lift-a-fire" mechanism). Both designs let you change cooking temperature by adjusting charcoal-to-grid distance rather than by adding or removing fuel mid-cook.

Smoker hood (SC01C series only)

The SC01C series ships with a heavy-duty 304 stainless steel smoker hood that includes:

  • Adjustable air shutters on the hood for precise temperature control. Open the shutters wide to draw more air through the charcoal (higher temperature); close them down for low-and-slow smoking.
  • Analog thermometer mounted on the hood for direct temperature readings.
  • Removable charcoal shield beneath the cooking grid that allows indirect cooking and smoking by blocking the direct line between the charcoal and the food.

The Lift-A-Fire 3339 does not ship with a smoker hood or analog thermometer. An optional oven hood is available as an accessory; verify the hood SKU in the Fire Magic accessory catalog before ordering.

Front-loading charcoal door

All Legacy charcoal grills include a front-loading charcoal door that lets you add or remove charcoal during the cook without lifting the hood. This preserves the cooking environment (temperature and smoke) and avoids the heat-loss penalty of opening the hood mid-cook. The door is below the cooking grid and opens forward; plan island or post placement so the door swings clear without obstruction.

Lighting and wood chunks

Light the charcoal with a chimney starter (recommended), an electric loop charcoal starter, or natural lighter cubes. Do not use lighter fluid — it can damage the porcelain components and impart flavor to subsequent cooks. Once the charcoal is fully ashed-over, transfer it into the charcoal pan and adjust to cooking height. Add hardwood chunks (hickory, mesquite, oak, applewood, pecan) directly onto the lit charcoal for smoke flavor — Legacy grills work well with both charcoal and wood.

Ash handling

Each Legacy grill includes an ash collection drawer beneath the charcoal pan. After cooking — and after the ashes have cooled fully — slide the drawer out, dispose of the ashes into a sealed metal container, and return the drawer. Per the Fire Magic warranty, the charcoal pan, charcoal grid, thermometer, and ash tray are warrantied for 1 year (the rest of the SC01C charcoal grill carries the standard 5-year warranty).

Island Planning Notes

Framing materials, ventilation, and weight

Framing materials

The cutout dimensions in the table above assume a non-combustible enclosure. If you are framing a wood or other combustible enclosure, an approved Fire Magic insulating liner is required (sold separately) — and the cutout dimensions change to accommodate the liner thickness. Refer to the liner instructions for the adjusted cutout. Pre-fabricated outdoor kitchen islands designed for built-in grills typically meet the non-combustible requirement.

Per the Fire Magic owner's manual: the enclosure must be installed on a hard and level surface, must be properly vented, must have a non-combustible countertop, and must allow access to the interior for installation, ash handling, and service. The grill is supported by the stainless steel hanger extending from the upper portion of the unit (resting on left, right, and back of the cutout) plus front support adjustment hardware below the control area.

Counter substrate and overhang

If the countertop extends beyond the front wall (creating a countertop overhang), the overhang must be cut flush with the front wall for the width of the front charcoal door — or a gap will be created that interferes with door operation. Maintain ¼″ clearance around the front access door for service and routine ash removal.

Ventilation

The enclosure must be properly vented. Charcoal combustion produces more particulate and ash than gas combustion; design vent openings to allow combustion air to enter from below and let smoke and heat escape from above. Vent openings must maintain 6″ clearance between each opening and 2″ clearance from any item within the enclosure.

Storage near the grill

Plan dry storage near the grill for charcoal bags, lighter cubes, wood chunks, and a chimney starter. Store charcoal in a sealed container away from heat and ignition sources. Plan the ash disposal workflow before installation — a dedicated metal ash bin near the grill (outside the island enclosure) keeps ash management simple and code-compliant.

Permanent outdoor installation only

The Fire Magic warranty applies to the original purchaser at the original installation address and to single-family residential use only. Coverage is voided for grills installed in commercial, rental, or non-residential applications. See the Warranty section of the comparison guide for the full tier table.

FAQ

Top installation questions for the Legacy Charcoal lineup

What are the cutout dimensions for a Fire Magic Legacy charcoal built-in grill?

12-SC01C-A 24″ (304 stainless steel built-in): 26¼″ wide × 19¾″ deep × 12″ high. 14-SC01C-A 30″ (304 stainless steel built-in): 32¼″ wide × 19¾″ deep × 12″ high. 3339 Lift-A-Fire 24″ (powder-coated built-in): 24¾″ wide × 17¾″ deep × 12″ high. Cutout depth is 19¾″ on the SC01C series and 17¾″ on the Lift-A-Fire 3339; cutout height is 12″ across the entire Legacy charcoal lineup. The 22-SC01C post-mount variants (P6 patio, G6 in-ground) do not have a cutout — they install on a 304 stainless steel post.

Does a Fire Magic Legacy charcoal grill require gas or electricity?

No. Fire Magic Legacy charcoal grills run on charcoal only — no gas line, no electrical outlet, no batteries required. The grill uses a manually loaded charcoal pan with adjustable height (raised or lowered via a crank handle on the SC01C series for direct or indirect cooking) and a stainless steel smoker hood with adjustable air shutters for temperature control. Light the charcoal with a chimney starter, hardwood lumps, or charcoal briquettes. Optional wood chunks add smoke flavor. The front-loading charcoal door allows refilling without lifting the hood.

What clearances does a Fire Magic Legacy charcoal grill require?

Per the Fire Magic owner's manual: side wall minimum 18″; rear wall minimum 4″ from a non-combustible wall, 14″ from a protected combustible wall, or 18″ from an unprotected combustible wall; backsplash minimum 4″; corner wall minimum 24″. Maintain a horizontal clearance of 18″ in all directions from any combustible material or item. The grill cannot be operated under a combustible overhead structure unless an approved heavy-duty vent hood is installed and operated whenever the grill is in use. The 3339 Lift-A-Fire is powder-coated steel rather than 304 stainless steel — the same clearance rules apply.

What is the difference between the SC01C and Lift-A-Fire Legacy charcoal grills?

Construction and accessories. The SC01C series (12-SC01C-A 24″, 14-SC01C-A 30″, 22-SC01C 24″ post-mount) is built from 304 stainless steel with a stainless smoker hood, adjustable charcoal pan with crank handle, front-loading charcoal door, analog thermometer, and adjustable air shutters — all included. The Lift-A-Fire 3339 (24″ built-in) is powder-coated steel construction with the same adjustable charcoal pan and front door but no smoker hood and no analog thermometer included. Cooking grids on the Lift-A-Fire 3339 are ordered separately as accessories. The SC01C series carries the standard 5-year Fire Magic charcoal warranty (excluding the 1-year-warrantied charcoal pan, charcoal grid, thermometer, and ash tray).
