What off-grid means for a wood stove
Off-grid wood stoves operate without any electrical connection. No blower, no electronic ignition, no thermostat circuit, no rheostat. The stove runs entirely on natural draft from the chimney and manual damper control. Off-grid is the operating mode for homesteads, cabins without power, hunting camps, tiny houses, and grid-tied homes that want a wood-fire fallback during power outages.
The Buck Stove Homesteader is unique
The Buck Stove Homesteader is the only true off-grid product we carry. It combines a wood-burning firebox with a functional cooktop and a built-in oven. The firebox sits at the bottom, the oven sits above the firebox, and the cooktop is on top. A middle damper on the side of the stove routes flue gases around the oven for baking and roasting (cooking mode) or straight up to the chimney for room heating (heating mode). Heats up to 1,800 sq ft.
Off-grid cooking modes
The Homesteader cooktop accepts two pots or pans for direct-heat cooking, frying, and sautéing. The oven bakes bread, roasts meat, and slow-cooks stews with a glass viewing window. Cooking mode reduces room heat output slightly as flue gases route around the oven, but the Homesteader still delivers meaningful warmth during meal preparation. Built for traditional off-grid living.

FAQ
What is the best off-grid wood stove? The Buck Stove Homesteader is our top off-grid pick because it combines heating and cooking into a single appliance with no electrical requirement. The cooktop and oven let you boil, fry, bake, and roast without power.
Can off-grid wood stoves run during power outages? Yes. That is the primary use case for many grid-tied homes that want a wood-fire backup. The Homesteader runs identically whether the grid is up or down.
Are off-grid wood stoves EPA certified? The Buck Stove Homesteader is tested to ANSI/UL1482-REV 7 and CAN/ULC-S627 standards. It is a cook stove (not a heating-only stove), so it is rated under a different category than standard EPA wood heaters.
