Three constraints decide a rooftop planter, in this order: whether you can physically get it up there, what it weighs once it is planted, and whether it stays put in wind. Access is the one people plan for last and regret first. A planter that arrives on a freight pallet needs a loading dock, not a service lift. A rooftop is the hardest place in a property to put a planter, and almost none of the difficulty is about the planter. It is about a stairwell, a service lift, a roof hatch, a wind exposure nobody measured, and a structure whose limits only one person is qualified to state. This guide works through the three constraints in the order they actually bite.
What makes a planter right for a rooftop
Everything on a roof has to clear three hurdles. Access: it has to physically reach the roof, which is a question about the route and the delivery method, not the planter. Weight: it has to be something the structure can carry once it is full of wet soil. Stability: it has to stay where you put it in wind that is stronger than anything at ground level.
Fiberglass answers the second and third better than most materials, because it is the lightest premium option and it does not crack in freeze-thaw. It does nothing at all for the first. A 60-inch fiberglass planter is still a 60-inch object that will not go up a stairwell.
Can you actually get it up there?
This is the constraint that decides your shortlist, and it is the one almost nobody checks before falling in love with a size.
Ground delivery versus freight
Ground delivery arrives on a normal parcel vehicle and can be carried by hand. Freight arrives palletized, and per the manufacturer's own guidance freight shipments “require a loading dock, forklift, or similar equipment for unloading at the delivery site.” On a rooftop project that distinction matters more than anywhere else: a pallet that cannot be broken down at the kerb is a pallet that is not reaching the ninth floor.

The split is set per size, not per model, and it does not follow a simple rule you could guess from the dimensions: a 48-inch Salon Box ships ground while a 48-inch Cuba Low Rectangular ships freight. Stairs, service lifts and roof hatches
Measure the tightest point of the route, not the roof. In practice the binding constraint is usually one of: the diagonal of the service lift car, the turn at a stair landing, or the clear opening of the roof hatch. A planter that fits the lift but not the hatch has to be craned, and craning changes the budget of a project rather than the line item of a planter.
Also plan the return trip. Planters get replaced, reconfigured for seasons, and moved for membrane inspections. Something you needed four people and a stair trolley to install is something you will not casually move again.
The models that ship ground in every size
Nineteen of our thirty-six rooftop models currently ship by ground in every size they come in, which makes them the safest starting point when the route is difficult or unknown. Notably, all eight corner planters fall into this group, along with the Short Hayden Bowl, Hayden Urn, Corry Cylinder, Monaco Rectangle, Shanghai Fishbowl, Salon Box, Aspen Round, Tegel Round Tapered, Santa Barbara Fluted Round and the Tiergarden Railing planter. Empty weights across that group run from about 7 to 34 pounds.
How much does a rooftop planter weigh?
Empty weight
Fiberglass is light. In our rooftop range the empty weights run from roughly 6 pounds for a small bowl to about 68 pounds for the largest. Every size publishes its own shipping weight on its product page, so you never have to work from a category average. Use the real figure for the exact size and finish you are specifying.
What soil adds, and how to add less
Once planted, soil and water dominate the total. The planter itself is usually a small fraction of what the roof ends up carrying, which is why a lighter planter does not solve a weight problem on its own. How much soil weighs depends entirely on the mix, and the honest source for that number is the supplier's own stated weight for the mix you are buying. We do not publish a figure of our own, because a saturated weight that is right for one blend is wrong for another.
What you can control is how much soil goes in. The manufacturer's owner's guide is explicit about this and it matters more on a roof than anywhere else:
- Use the optional internal shelf. Available on many models, it sits below the rim so a nursery pot rests on it instead of a full soil column underneath. Each shelf weighs about 3 to 5 pounds and supports 75 to 100 pounds.
- Fill voids with approved lightweight fillers (rubber mulch, plastic bottles) rather than more soil.
- Do not use heavy garden soil or fine sand. Both are barred by the manufacturer, and both are the heaviest thing you could put in a container on a roof.
A tall planter filled properly can carry a fraction of the soil weight of the same planter filled to the base, at no cost to how it looks.
Why height matters more than width
A tall narrow planter concentrates its weight over a small footprint. A low wide one spreads the same weight across a larger area. Two planters can weigh the same and load a roof deck very differently, and it is the slim column, not the big bowl, that concentrates it hardest. If you are working to a constrained structure, wide and shallow spends the budget better than tall and slim.
What size should you choose?
Work backwards from the route, not from the design. Establish the largest thing that can reach the roof, then choose within that. Our current rooftop range spans 7 to 60 inches tall, so there is almost always a size that works once the constraint is known. Usefully, the ground-shippable sizes are also the more affordable half of the range, so working within the access constraint rarely pushes you toward a more expensive planter. Beyond that, the usual rules apply: bigger planters hold more soil, dry out more slowly and need watering less often, which matters on a roof where you may not be visiting daily. Full sun and constant wind both accelerate drying. Where access allows it, go one size up rather than one size down.
Which shapes work on a roof
Low and wide
The default rooftop answer. Bowls and low rectangular troughs spread their weight, sit below the wind, and hold enough soil for grasses, herbs, succulents and low shrubs. If you have no information about your structure yet, this is the shape to start with.

Corner planters
Underrated on roofs and the most practical format we sell for them. A corner planter uses the angle of a parapet or a stair bulkhead, dead space that a round planter wastes, and it sits against structure rather than out in open wind. All eight of ours ship by ground in every size, from the 14-inch Cuba Corner at 12.3 pounds to the 24-inch Torino Corner at 33.5 pounds.
Railing and parapet edges
For a planted edge without putting a tall object in the windiest part of the roof, the Tiergarden Railing planter is the one purpose-built shape in the range: 36″L × 12″W × 10″H, 23.1 pounds empty, low enough to keep a sightline over it.
Tall, and when not to
Tall planters do real work on a roof: screening a neighbour, marking a threshold, giving a flat deck some vertical structure. They are also the shape that concentrates weight hardest, catches the most wind, and is most likely to tip. Use them, but use them against a wall or a bulkhead rather than at an exposed parapet, and settle the wind question before you buy. Note that the larger sizes of most tall outdoor planters ship by freight.

Wind exposure rises with height and is strongly shaped by the buildings around you, so there is no floor number above which anchoring becomes necessary. What is reliable is the pattern: tall and narrow tips, wide and low does not, and smooth decks let planters slide before they tip.
Four things help, in rough order of how much:
- Choose the shape first. A wide base beats any amount of remediation on a slim column.
- Group planters. A cluster shelters itself; a lone planter on an open deck does not.
- Ballast low. Weight in the bottom of the planter lowers the centre of gravity, but it also adds load, so it trades one constraint for another.
- Anchor. Bolting through a roof deck means penetrating a waterproofing membrane, which is not a decision to take without the person responsible for that membrane. In many buildings any penetration needs formal approval and a specified flashing detail.
Plants matter as much as planters here. Large-leaved species act as sails and shred in sustained wind long before the planter moves. Narrow, fine-textured, wind-firm planting (olive, cypress, rosemary, ornamental grasses) is standard on exposed roofs for a reason.
Drainage and protecting the roof
Drainage on a roof is not just a plant-health question, it is a roof-surface question. Water that sits under a planter stains, and water that runs constantly across one spot of a membrane is a maintenance problem you will meet years later.
Drainage holes are not drilled unless you ask for them. Drilling is free on request, cut to the manufacturer's standard of 1 to 2 inch holes every 12 inches of planter space, so a large planter gets several rather than one. Select it when you order: a planter that arrives undrilled cannot be drained later without tools, and one that arrives drilled is final sale. On a roof, add two things: something to lift the planter marginally clear of the deck so water can escape sideways rather than pooling underneath, and a saucer where run-off would otherwise cross a walking surface. One thing not to do on a roof: add a layer of gravel in the bottom “for drainage.” It does not work. Gravitational water will not move from a finely textured soil into a coarser material until the finer soil is already saturated, so a gravel layer raises the saturated zone into the root ball rather than draining it, as UC ANR and Washington State University’s work on container drainage both set out. On a rooftop it is worse than useless: you have added weight, on the one surface where weight is the constraint, in order to make drainage worse.
The structural question
Every roof has a live-load rating, it varies enormously between buildings, and no supplier can tell you what yours is. Published ranges are not useful here, because the difference between a standard commercial roof and a purpose-built amenity deck is large enough that a typical figure is as likely to mislead you as help. Your engineer works from the International Building Code and ASCE 7, but the figure that matters is the one calculated for your building, not one read off a standard.
The correct sequence is short. Get the rating from the engineer of record or the structural drawings. Take them the planted weight of what you are proposing, calculated wet rather than dry. Let them tell you whether it works. For commercial buildings this usually means formal sign-off, and in many jurisdictions a filing with the local buildings department. - Measure the tightest point of the delivery route: lift diagonal, stair turn, hatch opening.
- Check the delivery method on the product page for the exact size you want. Ground or freight is set per size.
- If it is freight, confirm there is somewhere to receive a pallet and a way to move it from there.
- Confirm the roof's live-load rating with the engineer of record. Not a published range.
- Plan the fill: internal shelf and lightweight filler rather than a full soil column.
- Choose shape for the wind exposure you actually have, not the one you would like.
- Sort drainage and run-off before install, not after the first storm.
